Regt., 1st Brigade, Ga. State Troops Oct. 9, 1861.
Mustered out Apr. 1862. Enlisted as a private in Co. A,
55th Regt. Ga. Inf. Apr. 30, 1862. Captured at Cumberland
Gap, Tenn. Sept. 9, 1863. Mustered into the 5th U.S. Inf.
at Camp Douglas, Ill. June 5, 1865.

This Regt. went on a scout of five days into Kentucky
Mar. 2, 1863, in company with Hart's Cavalry. The right
wing left Cumberland Gap, Tenn. Mar. 30, 1863. Arrived at
Clinton, Tenn. Apr. 2, 1863. Left there for Big Creek Gap
to meet a reported advance of the enemy. Remained in that
vicinity, and near Jackson, Tenn. for four days. Saw
nothing of the enemy. Returned to Clinton, Tenn.

A large portion of the 55th Regt. Ga. Inf. was captured
at Cumberland Gap, Tenn. Sept. 9, 1863. That portion of
the Regt. on detached service and detailed in hospitals,
having been ordered by the Secretary of War as Guard to
prisons, was organized with three companies as follows:
Co. B, Composed of remnants of Companies F, G, and I,
under command of Lt. Thornton, assisted by Lt. Etheridge
and Jr. 2d Lieutenant J.N. Jackson by order of A.W.
Parsons, Col. Commanding Post.
