D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty, personally appeared before me Thomas Coleman a Justice of the Peace duly authorized to administer oaths within and for the county and state aforesaid Nancy Ethridge aged 61 years, a resident of Randolph county in the State of Georgia… declares that she is the widow of Allen Ethridge deceased who was a Private Soldier in the Company commanded by Captain J Gilbert in the 1st first Regiment of U. S. G. M. commanded by Col J. B. Chambers in the war with Great Britain that her said husband was drafted in Wilkinson county Geo & mustered into service on or about the Second day of October A. D. 1812 for the term of Six months and continued in actual service in said war for the term of Six months & six days, and was honorably discharged at Camp Pinkney on the Second day of April A. D. 1813. She further states that she was married to the said Allen Ethridge in Washington County Georgia on or about the 1st day of June A. D. 1806 by a Baptist minister that she has no record of her marriage and that her name before her marriage was Nancy Anderson that her husband died in Stewart County Georgia on the twentieth day of August A. Very Respectfully, Duncan Jordan Declaration of a Widow for Pension Under the Act of February 14, 1871 War of 1812 State of Georgia, County of Randolph, On this second day of July, A. D., eighteen hundred and seventy three, personally appeared before me, Michael Gormley, Judge & exofficio clerk of the court of ordinary, a court of record in and for the county and state aforesaid, Nancy Ethridge, aged 85 years, a resident of the county of Randolph, state of Georgia, who … declares that she is the widow of Allen Ethridge, who served in the war of 1812, and who was the identica Private who was drafted in Captain Gilberts company … about September 1812, and was discharged at February or March 1813; that the discharge of Allen Ethridge was attached to her partition for land warrant. The warrant was issued & the discharge will doubtless be found in proper department at Washington City, that she was married under the name of Nancy Anderson, to said Allen Ethridge on the ___[blank] day of June A. D. 1807, by Henry Wooten Minister at Washington Co., Georgia there being no legal barrier to such marriage; that her said husband died in Stewart County, Georgia, on the 29th day of August, 1836, and that she has not remarried since his death… her post office is at Coleman Station, county of Randolph, State of Georgia; that her domicile or place of abode is in the county of Randolph State of Georgia [signed] Nancy x her mark Ethridge Attest: W. The matter of the Application of Nancy Ethredge Randolph county, state of Georgia, to be pensioner under the act of February 14, 1871, in which case William F Davis & John M Cox are witnesses to testify to the loyalty of said claimant, I hereby certify that, after a careful investigation, I am convinced that they are men of undoubted good character for truth and veracity, and that their statements in the affidavit referred to are worthy of full faith and credit. July 21’1873 War of 1812 In the claim of Nancy Etheridge for a widow’s pension under act of February 14, 1874, No. 10250, proof of her marriage to the soldier prior to February 17, 1815, is required. [underlined.] You are informed that proof upon this point is of value in the following order. 1. A certified copy of a church or other public record. 2. An affidavit of the officiating clergyman or magistrate. 3. The testimony of two or more eye-witnesses of the ceremony. 4. The testimony of two or more witnesses who know the parties to have lived together as husband and wife from the date of their alleged marriage, the witnesses stating the period during which they knew them thus to cohabit. Before any of the lower classes of evidence can be accepted, it must be shown by competent testimony that none higher can be obtained. [sentence underlined] In all affidavits relative to marriage, the affiants should state their ages at the time they testify. July 21’ 1873 Sir: In the claim of Nancy Etheridge for widows pension under act of February 14’ 1873, No. 10250, proof of claimants marriage prior to the Treaty of Peace, February 17’ 1815 is required. A marriage circular is enclosed. If there is a Family or Bible record showing date of her marriage or births of children, a cop of the same certified by a proper officer after examination by him, as being a true and correct transcript should be furnished. The following evidence under oath by two persons acquainted with the fact is also required. Proof of the death of the soldier. Please return this letter with the evidence. Very respectfully, Jos.? Aug 11 1873 Sir: I have the honor to herewith inclose evidence in the pension claim of Nancy Etheredge, though but our affidavit dates beyond Feb 17, 1815, or rather proves marriage prior to said date. I trust that upon the whole it will be found Satisfactory Though Harrison F Etheredge does not state the length of time hat he knew parties to have cohabited as husband and wife, from twelve to fifteen years is easily deductible from the dates given. Georgia, Randolph County Personally appeared before me Michael Gormley, Ordinary in & for the county & state aforesaid Henry Anderson a resident & citizen of Stewart county Georgia who being sworn says he knew Allen Ethredge during his lifetime- that said Allen Ethredge was married to the sister, Nancy Anderson, of deponent in Washington County Georgia in or about the month of June 1807- Henry Wooten a minister of the Gospel performed the marriage ceremony- Knows that Allen Ethredge & Nancy Anderson after their marriage lived & cohabited together & had children born unto them Robert, James, Lewis, & daughter (name not now remembered) who died early in her life- they lived together & were recognized by deponent & all the Family & acquaintances as Husband & wife until the death of Allen Ethredge which occurred in Stewart County Georgia August 29th 1836- Nancy Ethredge the widow & applicant for Pension survives & now resides in Randolph county Georgia- her age is eighty five years deponent being her junior six years- Deponent further knows & swears that Allen Ethredge served as a private in the company commanded by Captain Gilbert (christened named not remembered) in the war with Great Britain known as the last British War- Deponent a few days after the departure of Allen Ethredge for the war removed Nancy Ethredge from Wilkinson County Georgia to Washington County Georgia where her Father resided & with whom she remained until the return of her husband in February or March 1813.— Deponent further swears that Nancy Ethredge has remained unmarried since the death of her husband Allen Ethredge & is now a widow [signed] Henry Anderson [ his original signature] Sworn to & subscribed before me Aug 6th 1873, M Gormley Ordinary Georgia Randolph county I Michael Gormley Ordinary in & for the county & state aforesaid & Exofficio clerk of the court of Ordinary do certify that Henry Anderson made & subscribed the above affidavit before me & that though not personally known to me I believe him Henry Anderson, from his appearance, conversation & acquaintance with citizens of this town & county to be the identical person he represents himself to be- Given under my official signature & seal of office at Cuthbert Randolph County Georgia August 6th 1873 M Gormley Ordinary and Ex officio clerk Georgia Randolph county Personally appeared before me Michael Gormley Ordinary in & for said county & state & exofficio clerk of the court of Ordinary, Harrison F Ethredge who being sworn says he is fifty five years of age- Knew Allen Ethredge in his lifetime & his wife Nancy Ethredge- Allen Ethredge died in Stewart county Georgia he thinks in the year 1836 Allen Ethredge & Nancy Ethredge lived & cohabited together as Husband & wife—were ever recognized as such by the family & acquaintances & had children born unto them- Robert, James, Lewis, Henry- was also a daughter who died early in her life but with her he was not acquainted Nancy Ethredge the widow of Allen Ethredge now resides in Randolph County Georgia & has not married since the death of Allen Ethredge- Deponent has no interest in her estate nor can he be benefited by receipt of Pension to her- Knew Allen Ethredge & Nancy Ethredge living together as Husband & wife since his earliest recollection until death of Allen Ethredge & know Nancy Ethredge now Sworn to & subscribed before me Aug 7th 1873 M Gormley Ordinary [signed] Harrison F Etheredge [his original signature] Georgia Randolph County I Michael Gormley Ordinary in & for said county & state exofficio clerk of the court of ordinary certify that Harrison F Ethridge made & subscribed before me the foregoing Affidavit & that he is a citizen & resident of said state & county & although personally unknown to me from his appearance, conversation & acquaintance with citizens of this town & county I believe him to be the identical person he expresses himself – as appears from Tax books in my office he is a resident & Tax payer of this county…. Reports: Allen Ethridge served in Capt Gilberts Co., Georgia Militia, from 7 October 1812, to March 31 1813, Total service 176 days. Soldier died August 29’ 1836, date and fact established by report from Bounty Land Division Continued widowhood since his death established by testimony of two witnesses William F Davis and John M Cox.
