All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Lindy Hard Table of Contents page: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/randolph.htm Georgia Table of Contents: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm Major John F Kiser 1882 obituary Cuthbert Appeal 4 Aug 1882 (says it is quoting from Atlanta Constitution) Abstract: born in Campbell Co, Mar 27th 1836; youngest of 6 sons; father was a farmer & until he was 18 he was a farmer boy; temperate in his habits; from the plow handles he went to Powder Springs and engaged as clerk with W J & M P Kiser, his older brothers; in 1860 entered business with his brother W J Kiser; 1861 joined the army & left his home as a lieutenant in Seventh GA Regiment; later elected captain; promoted and made a major; wounded at 2nd battle of Manassas in his right hand; shot through the lung at the battle of the Wilderness; recovered; declined discharge; close of war returned to Powder Springs & entered business again; 1868 came to Atlanta with brother M C Kiser-- formed a partnership in retail dry goods business on Whitehall St with a capital of $15000 each.... entered wholesale trade & in 1872 moved to present 5 story building opposite the Kimball house; Major Kiser made the buyer of the firm...two trips to Europe...considered the best buyer in the south...popular in New York; on 12 Jan 1871, married to Miss Agnes F Lane, daughter of General James T Lane, of Athens, Tennessee; she lived only a few years & died leaving no children; on 19 Nov 1879, married to Miss Mary Cobb Hood, daughter of Judge Arthur Hood, of Cuthbert; leaves no children; fortune estimated at quarter of a million dollars; made a will before his last European trip, but that was prior to his last marriage, and has probably been destroyed ______________________________
