Fort Gordon Cemeteries Inscriptions Richmond County, GA CEMETERIES OF FORT GORDON, GEORGIA Survey taken in the Summer of 1998 Compiled by SSG John and Libbie Davis Fort Gordon is located near the city of Augusta and occupies a large area of Richmond County and smaller portions of McDuffie, Jefferson and Columbia Counties. The land was purchased by the military in 1940; this area was evidently settled after the Revolutionary War and before 1830. Because this is a Military Base and some of the cemeteries are located in shell impact areas and the on going military exercises being conducted, anyone who would like to visit any cemetery needs to contact the Environmental and Natural Resources Management Office at 791-2397 or 791-2327. There was a survey done by the DFE Forestry Section in October 1982, which was used as a reference guide during our survey. We would like to thank Gary Pringle of the Environmental Office for all of his help, without which we would not have been able to complete this survey also the men of the Forestry section who gave freely of their time to take us to those areas that were restricted, and last but not least the help of Dr. Stokes of the Command Historian's Office. ================================================= Cemetery # 1 WW II GERMAN POW CEMETERY located at gate # 2 ================================================= Headstones in this Cemetery contained name, rank, and date of death, I have taken the liberty of adding information in the notes from the book WORLD WAR II PRISONER OF WAR IN GEORGIA CAMP GORDON'S POWS by Kathy Roe Coken, Phd, Command Historian office U.
