Company D 12th Georgia Battalion Georgia Light Artillery Roster of Company D 12th Georgia Battalion Capt. Joseph N. Taliaferro This company was organized in December 1862 when Capt. Samuel H. Crump's Company was split, forming Company D commanded by Capt. Joseph N. Taliaferro and Company F commanded by Capt. George M. Hood. Capt. Crump was promoted to Gen. W.H.T. Walkers Staff. Capt. Crump returned to the 12th Georgia at Petersburg in 1865. Individuals whose name is preceeded by a * were in Capt. Crump's Company prior to the split, and have no record after the split. The company was made up of men from the Augusta GA area. The primary source for the following information is the Compiled Service Records, GA Dept. of Archives and History, drawer 254 boxes 31-35, with additional information from the records of the Soldier Roster Commission, GA Dept. of Archives and History, RG-58-2-26 box 83 Loc. 3297-15. Denham applied Richmond Co. 1/12/93. She was a GA resident all her life. They married 6/59. She stated that Joseph was wounded in the left Shoulder and in the left Breast. He died 2/24/77 of Consumption from the Breast wound. He was never able to work from the time that he was wounded until the time of death. Witness' W.S. Howard, T. Hamill, and J.B. Bottom stated that Howard was Sgt. of the Co. and that Denham was wounded either at Winchester or Monocacy, causing a suppurative sore which never healed. They saw him several times after the war, the wound never healed and caused his death. Witness G.R. Brown stated that the wound was kept open by the Physician who felt that if the wound healed, Consumption would be the result. J.W. Was at Danville, NC on sick list when Lee surrendered. One witness was Sheriff J.W. Rowland of Johnson Co. who was not a member of the 12th GA. Another witness F.A. Baggett of Washington Co. stated that he (the witness) was captured 7/64, and that Dowd was a good soldier up to then. (Baggett was in Co. F) Joseph Dowd moved from Johnson Co. to Montgomery Co. and transferred his pension in 1905. Living 1907 in Montgomery Co. She was GA resident all her life. William C. Langham married Margaret Hammitt 1/16/62, Warren Co. William died Glascock Co. 6/5/09. Witness Jos. L. Peebles had known Langham since 1850. They were both present at surrender. Margaret died 7/21/28 Glascock Co., her funeral expense paid by W.S. Langham. W.C. Langham was a witness for J.L. Peebles in 1900. He stated that he was wounded and sent to the hospital about a week before the surrender. He and Peebles left the hospital and traveled together as far as they could, and were picked up by the ambulance corps and taken to the field hospital where they were at the surrender. Langley F. He stated that he first joined Crump's Company of Artillery at Augusta. The company was changed to Infantry Company D of the 12th GA Battalion. He served until the surrender. Witness W.H. Stone stated that they enlisted together, and that Lowe was one of the best. The file includes a petition from the McDuffie Co. Grand Jury asking that Lowe be granted a pension. Lowe further stated 12/98:" My foot has been bad ever since the war caused from marching barefooted part of the time." David Lowe died 4/28/09 in Richmond Co. Widow Talulah A. Bottom stated that Rowe was wounded at Battle of Turkey Ridge 6/64. (Cold Harbor 6/2/64) They further stated that gangrene set in, and he never rejoined the command afterward, he was unfit for duty. Pension was at first disallowed due to a lack of evidence that James Rowe's death was the result of his wound. In 1902, Charles Rowe and Thomas Rowe stated that they were constantly with James and his wound never healed, and was a running sore, and poisoned his entire system. This is confirmed by physician's statements. Confederate Military History Vol. III West Virginia pg 284 list Albert Frederick Wallen as a business man at Charleston, WV. He was born at Charleston, SC 1846, the son of Albert F. Wallen who was an emigrant from Bohemia. At the time of the war, the family lived at Augusta, GA. The senior Wallen served in the 3ed GA Inf. in 1861. Albert was wounded at Monocacy, MD, shot in the Breast, and disabled for 2 months. He was slightly wounded at Cedar Creek, and received the following commendation signed by Capt. Johnson, Gen. Evans, Gen. Gordon, and approved by Gen. Early: 10/30/64 We, the undersigned members of the 12th GA Battalion, do hereby petition the Lieutenaut-General commanding to grant Private A. Wallen, Company D, 12th GA Battalion, a thirty-day furlough for gallantry displayed in the battle of Cedar Creek. Private Wallen is only about 15 years old. The Color-bearer of the battalion was killed in trying to rally the men. Private Wallen ran back and got the colors under a heavy fire and brought them safely off. He has also displayed great bravery in every battle in which he has been engaged, and is a model soldier.
