 Roster of Company F, 12th Georgia Battalion
Capt. George M. Hood

This company was organized in December 1862 when Capt.
Samuel H. Crump's Company was split, forming Company D
commanded by Capt. Joseph N. Taliaferro and Company F
commanded by Capt. George M. Hood. Capt. Crump was
promoted to Gen. W.H.T. Walkers Staff. Capt. Crump
returned to the 12th Georgia at Petersburg in 1865. The
company was made up of men from the Augusta GA area.

The primary source for the following information is the
Compiled Service Records, GA Dept. of Archives and
History, drawer 254 boxes 31-35, with additional
information from the records of the Soldier Roster
Commission, GA Dept. of Archives and History, RG-58-2-26
box 83 Loc. 3297-15. Information was also taken from
private letters, county histories, and local newspapers
when available.

PR indicates information taken from pension records. RCS
indicates information taken from the Roster of the
Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861 - 1865.

Allison J. Bellinger, 2Lt. Enlisted 5/1/62, Augusta,
promoted 2Lt 1/19/63, Listed as wounded Monocacy, MD
7/9/64, surrendered 4/9/65 Appomattox.

Ashford R.A., Pvt., Enlisted 2/4/64, Augusta, Captured
7/16/64 Poolesville, MD, Took oath of Allegiance, sent to
Maine. 1870 Census list Robert A. Ashford living Richmond
Co GA age 30.

Atkinson A.D., Pvt., Enlisted 5/10/62, Augusta, Captured
Fishers Hill 9/22/64. Listed in B.L. Neal's book as Avery
Atkinson shown with a list of prisoners sent to Point
Lookout.

Atkinson M.H., Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Augusta, Wounded
7/9/64 and Captured Monocacy, MD, Exchanged 10/30/64. PR
Applied 2/14/89 Brooks Co. Born GA 1/25/41. Wounded
Monocacy, MD minnie ball entering below left Knee and
passing through at Calf. Gangrene set in and wound never
healed, remained a 2" diameter running sore. In 1891,
Atkinson applied to have his pension transferred to
Thomas Co. His leg was amputated in 1904 due to the
unhealed wound. He died in Thomas Co. 1/6/17. His widow
was Eliza A. Atkinson. They married in Jefferson Co.
11/15/66.

Attaway William, Pvt., Enlisted 4/6/63, Augusta, Captured
4/3/65 while in hospital at Richmond.

Baggett Francis A., Pvt., Enlisted 5/6/62, Augusta,
Wounded 7/9/64 and Captured Monocacy, MD, Exchanged
10/30/64. PR Applied Washington Co. 4/10/95. Born 11/8/41
Warren Co. A farmer with a wife and 3 children, 2 boys 11
and 9, and a girl 7 or 8. They help with the work.
Wounded on top of head. Physician stated that he had a
gun shot wound to top of head that causes fits. Witness
W.G. Knight of Washington Co. and the same battalion but
a different company, stated that the applicant was
discharged at the surrender. In a 1903 statement, Baggett
said that he had been captured at Frederick City
(Monocacy) 7/9/64. In 1903, he had 2 children, a boy 20,
and a girl 16. Witness J.J. Doughty was wounded and
captured 7/9/64, and applicant was present at that time.
Witness further stated that he (the witness) was
exchanged and at home in Augusta at the time of the
surrender. In 1904 Baggett stated that he was exchanged
from Point Lookout POW camp, and at home at the time of
the surrender, and that he had attempted to get back to
his command, but failed. J.W. Gibbs, a witness in 1904
stated that he (the witness) was captured 3/25/65 and
sent to prison, and to the best of his memory, Baggett
was wounded and captured at Frederick City, MD 7/9/64.
Baggett did receive a pension, for in 1906 he applied to
have it transferred to Johnson Co. In 1907 he applied to
have his pension transferred back to Washington Co.
Francis Baggett died 7/16/27 in Bibb Co.

3/25/65, Arm amputated. 1850 Census list Henry Bartley
age 6 living Richmond Co in the household of Patrick
Bartley who was born Ireland.

Beale John W., Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Augusta, AWOL
7/19/63, Arrested Charleston 8/63, AWOL 10/13/64, last
entry. 1850 Census list John W. Beall age 14 living
Richmond Co in the household of Elbert Blackstone, a
laborer. PR James M. Cliett stated in 1907 that he
transferred from the 28th GA into the 12th GA Battalion
in exchange for John Beale 2/64.

Borchers George, Sgt., Enlisted 5/14/62, Augusta,
Captured 9/19/64 Winchester, VA, Died Pt. Lookout, MD POW

Bourne William J., Pvt., Enlisted 11/26/63, Augusta,
Wounded 7/9/64 Monocacy, MD., Taken prisoner at hospital
Frederick, MD. 7/10/64, Leg Amputated, Died Frederick,
MD. 8/12/64, Buried Mt. Olivet Cemetery Frederick. PR
Widow Catherine applied Fulton Co. 7/20/91. She had been
a resident of GA all her life. They married in 1851.
Witness' F.A. Baggett, S.R. Clark, and M.H. Atkinson. All
3 knew of the wounds received by Bourne. Atkinson was
also wounded, Baggett saw Bourne the night before he
died, when there was no hope of recovery. Records show
that Catherine received a pension in Fulton Co. thru
1907.

Briscoe L.M., Pvt., Enlisted 5/5/62, Augusta. PR Applied
Dekalb Co 3/8/99, born 3/8/29 Oglethorpe Co. He left unit
in the Spring of 1863 at Savannah, due to illness.
Witness John A. Wilkerson of McDuffee Co. stated that
Briscoe was discharged on account of Rheumatism, that
while able, he had been a good soldier. At the time of
the application, he was almost blind according to his
doctor. Wife 68 years old, 4 married children living in
different states. Briscoe sells fruit trees and makes
shoes. His wife teaches at home. Listed as Invalid on UDC
roster located in Special Collections 83-65-4 at Augusta
College Library.

Frederick, MD, Transferred to hospital Baltimore, MD,
Exchanged 9/23/64. The Confederate Veteran states that
Clark died Hephzibah, GA 12/9/20. The CV also states that
Clark was survived by 3 sons and 2 daughters, a sister,
and 11 grandchildren. He was buried at the Brothersville
Cemetery. 1850 Census list Samuel R. Clark age 6 living
Richmond Co in the household of Samuel B. Clark, a
Physician. In same household, Charles E. Clark. PR
Witness for Catherine Bourne, Widow of William J. Bourne
in 1891.

Cliett Charles, Pvt., Enlisted 2/12/64, Augusta,
Surrendered 4/9/65 Appomattox with Gen. Lee. PR Applied
Columbia Co. 8/22/01, born 3/18/45 Columbia Co. Witness
Emanuel I. King stated that they both served until the
surrender. Charles was a laborer with a wife and 5
children. In 1901, he had no means of support. He died
2/15. Widow applied Columbia Co. 10/13/19. Charley Cliett
married Emma Farmer 4/2/74 in Richmond Co. She died
7/5/30 in Richmond Co

Cliett James M., Pvt., Enlisted 2/3/64, Augusta, Wounded
Rt Hand Cold Harbor 6/2/64, Hospitalized 6/3/64 Richmond,
AWOL 8/6/64. PR Applied Richmond Co. 2/23/95. Born
Richmond Co. 10/16/41. James stated that he had been
wounded in the left Hand 11/63 at Fort Sumter, lost
middle Finger, and cannot grip with that Hand. Also
wounded at the Battle of Turkey Ridge, VA 6/2/64, in
right Hand, losing middle and index Fingers. Right Hand
of more use than left. James furnished the following
witness' in 1895: T. Hamill, C. Cliett, T. Parker, J.W.
Ramsey, and J. Bottom. James reapplied in 1907 and stated
that he first joined the 28th GA, and exchanged with John
Beale 2/64, and took his place in the 12th GA Co. F. He
further stated that he had been wounded at
Mechanicsville, VA, sent to the hospital, and later sent
to Augusta, GA. He was given Provost duty at Augusta when
his Hand was well enough. He was at Augusta at wars
close. A timber cutter when able, has a wife and 4?
children all of age and gone from home. 1907 witness C.
Cliett of Columbia Co. stated that he had known James all
his life, 63 years. The witness stated that he had joined
the company when the applicant transferred into it. The
witness was present at the surrender, but the applicant
was wounded at Gaines Mill Pond, VA. (Gaines Mill Pond,
Mechanicsville, and Turkey Ridge all refer to the Battle
of Cold Harbor) James M. Cliett died 10/26/09 in Columbia
Co. Widow applied Richmond Co. 10/25/19. James married
Mary J. Jones 3/18/80 in Richmond Co. She died 3/26/36 in
Richmond Co. Buried at Westview Cemetery Augusta, GA.

Cook Isaiah, Pvt., Enlisted 5/12/62, Augusta, Wounded
left hand mini ball 6/64, Wounded Winchester 9/19/64,
Captured in hospital at Farmville, VA 4/8/65, Paroled
Farmville 4/11-21/65. 1870 census list Isaah Cook living
Clarke Co GA age 33. PR Applied Tattnall Co. 10/6/10. A
resident of GA since birth. He stated that he was present
at the surrender. Witness J.H. Rhodes of Jefferson Co.
was at home on furlough at the time of the surrender, but
that other members of the company told him that the
applicant was present at the surrender. In a 1911
statement, Isaiah Cook stated that he was called Ike in
the service. He further stated that the company was not
at the Court House at Appomattox, but nearby on the
Richmond & Danville Railroad, and from there he was
paroled. He also said that he knows of no one living who
was at the surrender with him, but several were there. It
appears that pension was not allowed at that time, but
eventually was allowed, for in 1917 his pension was
transferred from Tattnall Co. to Toombs Co. Isaiah Cook
died 2/4/25 in Toombs Co. Widow applied Toombs Co.
5/14/25. Isaiah Cook married Fannie L. Burgeron 12/16/83
in Jefferson Co. Witness to marriage and death, C.E. Cook
of Chatham Co. She applied in Decatur Co. 6/1/35. Fannie
was living with her son in Climax, GA. Witness her
Brother, J.G. Burgeron and friend F.J. Oglesby. Isaiah
and Fannie raised 6 children according to H.W. Perkins,
Isaiah's former employer.

Fulton Co. A resident of GA all his life, since 3/4/44.
Wounded Cedar Creek 10/19/64, when a cannon ball struck
an oak tree and shattered the tree. Part of the tree
struck Dixon, wounding left elbow and abdomen.

Doughty Joshua J., 1Lt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Promoted 1Lt.
1/14/63, Wounded Monocacy, MD 7/9/64, Captured near
Washington, DC 7/12/64, Exchanged Fort Delaware 9/28/64,
Received Varina, VA 10/5/64. RCS Permanently disabled
when wounded at Monocacy. Also served in Co. D Ramsey's
1st. GA. Confederate Military History Vol. VII pg 614
list Doughty as born Richmond Co. 1841. Also states that
he was wounded in the Mouth at Monocacy and captured at
the Hospital at Frederick, MD. He was commanding the
company at the time of his wound. The Augusta City
Directory of 1880 list Doughty as employed by J.J.
Doughty & Co. Cotton Brokers. Last listing for Doughty is
in the 1914 directory.

Embree Gouverneur H., Pvt., Enlisted 5/13/62, Augusta,
Transferred to 20th GA Cav. in exchange for Pvt. J.D.
McCullers 12/16/63. 1870 Census list Gourvernier Embree
age 24 living Columbia Co. PR Applied Richmond Co.
6/18/19. GA resident all his life, since 2/10/45. Joined
Co. F 6th GA Reg. and served 6 months. Then served in
12th GA Battalion, and then transferred to 20th GA
Cavalry. Horse killed at Trevilian Station and was
afterward in Battle of Cold Harbor. Left command after
Cold Harbor by order of Captain to gather horses. Sent of
follow Sherman to get horses. Witness N.K. Butler Lt. Co.
E 8th GA stated that Embree was with unit at surrender at
Montezuma, GA. A petition in 1908 signed by Mayor W.W.
Dunbar, Chief of Police M.J. Norris, former Chief of
Police G.M. Hood, the Sheriff, and several other
officials, stated that G.H. Embree was a faithful
soldier. The file also includes a copy of a dues receipt
from the UCV Camp 435 dated 1898.

Gibbs James W., Pvt., Enlisted 5/12/62, Augusta, Wounded
shoulder 7/23/64, Wounded in back and captured Fort
Stedman 3/25/65. 1850 Census list James Gibbs age 17
living Richmond Co in the household of John Gibbs. PR
Applied Richmond Co. 9/1/03. Born Richmond Co. 6/19/32. A
farmer and a peddler with a wife and a daughter 16 years
of age at home. Enlisted 5/12/62 into Co. B, afterward
Co. F, served until 3/25/65 when shot & captured. Wounded
left side, ball coming out at Spine. Applicant was a
prisoner at the time of the surrender. Witness R.J.
Kennedy stated that he (the witness) was present at the
surrender, and the witness confirmed the applicants
statements. Gibbs died 10/21/09 Richmond Co. Widow Eliza
L. Gibbs applied Richmond Co. for pension due deceased
soldier. They married Richmond Co. 7/1/85. Obituary in
Augusta Chronicle states age 77, buried Barton Chapel,
Daughter Lizzie, 3 Sons: A.J., R.S., and J.E.

Gibbs Milton, Pvt., Enlisted 5/16/62, Augusta, Killed
Fort Sumter 10/31/63. Buried Magnolia Cemetery row 8
grave 39 Charleston, SC. Interment records burial
11/1/63, cause of death falling of wall at Fort Sumter,
died at hospital. 1850 Census list Milton E. Gibbs age 13
living Richmond Co in the household of William Gibbs.

Gibbs Nelson, Pvt., Enlisted 5/16/62, Augusta, 4/30/63
present, killed Isle of Hope, by accidental discharge of
a gun 5/63.

Glisson Daniel W., Pvt., Enlisted 1/10/63, Borsebells,
GA, Trans- ferred from 20th GA Cavalry 3/2/64, Sick in
Richmond hospital, Returned to duty 6/12/64 final entry,
Also listed as Wounded.

Glisson J.H., Pvt., Enlisted 5/22/62, Augusta,
Transferred from 20th GA Cavalry in exchange for D.R.
Green 4/63, Wounded Winchester 9/19/64, 11/1/64 listed as
absent with leave since 9/19/64, Surrendered 5/19/65
Augusta and paroled. PR Applied Emanuel Co. 8/12/05, born
2/1/39 in NC. A resident of GA since 1857. He was wounded
in the left hand according to physician's statement.
Witness G.M. Hood, former Capt. of company. John Glisson
was a farmer. At the time of application, he was
supported by help of children. He had a wife and 4
children. His girls were ages 10 - 14. John H. Glisson
died 3/7/22. Widow Vandella applied Emanuel Co. 7/31/22.
They married 9/5/67 in Jefferson Co.

Granade Columbus, Cpl., Enlisted 5/5/62, Augusta, Gun
shot wound arm 7/15/64, Appointed Cpl., Wounded in neck
and captured Fort Stedman near Petersburg 3/25/65,
Released 6/6/65. PR Applied Wilkes Co. 10/24/10. He had
been a resident of GA all his life, since 5/5/31. Granade
was a farmer. He stated that he had applied for a pension
in 1899 on the grounds of disability due to wounds, but
it had been refused for some reason. To the question when
did he leave the command, he answered: "The command left
me wounded behind Grant's B works in front of Petersburg
3/25/65." He further stated that he was severely wounded
and captured and transported to City Point and to
Washington D.C. He was released 6/65. Witness J.A.
Wilkerson of McDuffie Co. was in Jackson Hospital at the
time of the surrender.

Green D.R., Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Augusta, Substitute
for Thomas J Symms. Transferred to Macon 2/28/63 due to
being infected with syphilis. 1850 Census list Daniel
Green age 24, a laborer from Ireland, living Richmond Co.
in the household of Barney Henry, an Irish laborer.

Gresham James D., Pvt., Enlisted 6/18/63, Savannah,
Substitute for William Hill, Killed Winchester, VA
9/19/64.

Hamill Thomas, 1st. Sgt., Enlisted 4/19/62, Augusta,
Wounded and captured 9/19/64 Winchester, VA leg amputated
at POW hospital. PR Applied Richmond Co. 2/6/89. GA
resident since 1854. He stated that he had been a Sgt.
and that he was wounded at Winchester 9/19/64, and that
he lost his right leg below the knee. Witness for James
Cliett in 1895. Witness for T. Welch 1889 stated that he
had been Ord. Sgt. RCS Transferred from Fort McHenry, MD
to Point Lookout, MD for exchange 2/20/65. Also served in
Co. I Ramsey's 1st. GA. Died 4/25/97 according to records
Confederate Survivors Assoc meetings Augusta College
Library.

Harveston George, Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Augusta,
Captured Maryland Hights, MD 7/7/64, Died of smallpox
8/15/64 a POW Elmira, NY.

Harveston William L., Pvt., Enlisted 5/10/62, Augusta,
Listed as Wounded Cold Harbor 6/2/64, Surrendered 4/9/65
Appomattox with Gen. Lee.

Heath John Q., Pvt., Enlisted 9/18/63, Decatur,
Conscript, Sick during much of the War, 11/1/64 listed as

present, Color Guard, Killed carrying Colors Monocacy, MD
7/9/64. PR Widow Martha J. Hill applied Richmond Co.
4/10/91. She had been a GA resident since birth 1838.
They married 5/2/62.(3 days before he enlisted) He died
7/9/64 from wounds received at Monocacy. 3 witness' were

occupation of Fort Sumter when it was being demolished in
1863, participated in FL campaign, transferred to Army of
Northern Virginia, in Battle of Cold Harbor at right of
assaulting column, in defense of Lynchburg, and the
movement up the valley until 7/64. At time of surrender
Hitt was detailed to quartermaster service in Augusta.

Howard William S., Sgt., Enlisted 5/10/62, Augusta,
4/30/63 listed as present. PR Applied Richmond Co.
2/5/89. He stated that while in Gen. Gracie's Brigade,
during the siege of Cumberland Gap, in the state of TN,
he was carrying dispatches on horseback as a courier. He
was riding at a rapid pace at night, going down the
mountain on a very rough turnpike near Big Creek Gap,
when the horse fell. The fall dislocated 2 Ribs and
fractured his Collar bone, and caused a large and painful
Hernia that still remains. Witness W.D. Wade stated that
Howard served with his unit until he was left in NC a few
weeks before the surrender due to injury. Howard was a
witness for A.M. MacMurphy in 1910, and stated that he
was a currier for Gen. Hampton and was carrying
dispatches at surrender. Witness for A. Templeton 1911,
he stated that he transferred to Co C 1st SC Cavalry
5/63.

7/4/33. She stated that her husband served until wounded
10/19/64 at Cedar Creek. He was hit by a minnie ball in
the left leg below the knee. He was never able to work or
walk with out crutches. His death 1/31/77 was a direct
result of his wound. He came home and never recovered,
went to war a sound man, and came home a helpless
cripple. 3 witness' A.J. Roberts and J.A. Wilkerson of
McDuffie Co. and G.H. Embree of Pickens Co. confirmed
that the wound never did get well, and he was cripple
until his death.

life. He stated that he served in the 1st GA, and later
enlisted into the 12th GA Battalion. He left the command
at Petersburg 2/65 with a 30 day furlough. He was cut off
by the Yankees, and the railroad was cut in SC. He
reported to headquarters in Augusta, and was detailed to
duty. He was never captured. Witness Amory S. Smith was
present at the surrender. RCS Also served in Co. D
Ramsey's 1st. GA.

Rhodes Whitney H., Pvt., Enlisted 5/8/62, Augusta,
Present 11/1/64. 1850 Census list Whitney H Rhodes age 7
living Richmond Co. in the household of John A. Rhodes.
In same household, Absolum and John A. Rhodes. PR Widow
applied Richmond Co. 10/5/10. She had been a resident of
GA since 1841. Whitney Rhodes married Rebecca Rheney
1/9/66 in Richmond Co. Whitney died 10/20/90 at Augusta,
GA. Witness Absalam Rhodes stated that he had been
present at Whitney's wedding, and had known him all his
life. He also stated that they had both been present at
the surrender, and that they had enlisted together.
Rebecca died Richmond Co. 2/26/15. The file includes a
letter from Walter Clark, Treasurer and Auditor of
Richmond Co. In this letter Clark stated that Whitney was
placed on a shoe making detail, and while on this detail,
the lines were broken at Petersburg, and Whitney was with
the wagon trains, not with the command.

Roberts A.J., Pvt., Enlisted 5/2/62, Augusta, Wounded rt
shoulder Ceder Creek 10/19/64. PR Applied McDuffie Co.
8/20/10. He had been a GA resident all his life. He
stated that he was wounded at Cedar Creek, and given a 60
day furlough by the Surgeon. And that he was on the way
back to the command at the time of the surrender, and
that he was never captured. Witness J.A. Wilkerson of
McDuffie Co. stated that he had known applicant for 60
years, and that he knows that Roberts was wounded at
Cedar Creek, but that he (the witness) was at home
wounded at the time of the surrender, and does not know
if the applicant returned to the command. Pension was not
allowed. Roberts was a witness in 1901 for W.A. Smith,
and contradicted statements made in his own application.

1898, has wife and 3 children, supported by family.
Applicant stated that he served 3 years and was
discharged by surrender. Witness W.C. Langham served
until the war ended. Pension was not allowed pending
additional information. On 2/25/01, witness A.J. Roberts
and applicant Smith both stated that they were both
captured at Frederick City (Monocacy) 7/9/64 and taken to
Fort McHenry at Baltimore, MD. They remained in prison
until 4/1/65, and could not locate their command before
the surrender. They were ordered to Augusta, GA and
paroled there. (This statement is not accurate for either
man.) A physician stated that the applicant has a Hernia
dating back to 1863 from carrying sand bags at
Charleston.

Stallings married Mary E. Teppe 9/6/91 at Augusta, she
was born 9/9/51 at Augusta. D.B. Stallings died 3/17/23
at Brunswick.

1850 Census list George F. Taylor age 19, a harness maker
born VA., living Richmond Co. in the household of Albert
Hatch, a saddle and harness maker. In same household,
Thomas P. Nunn. PR Applied Richmond Co. 2/4/90. A
resident of GA since birth, 10/16/27. Wounded Winchester
in left arm, shell knocked out about 3" of the bone above
the Elbow, causing arm to be short and almost useless.
Also hit by shell in left thigh which carried away large
portions of the muscle so that left leg is almost
useless. Applicant has to use a stick at all times.
Officer's Affidavit confirming information signed by
George M. Hood.

Sgt. confirm applicant's information. Welsh drew a
pension through 1895.

Wilkerson John A., Pvt., Enlisted 5/10/62, Augusta, AWOL
8/31/63, Admitted to Jackson Hospital Richmond 2/8/65
with gun shot wound left leg, Given 60 day furlough
3/30/65. PR Applied McDuffie Co. 7/10/06. Born Columbia
Co. 7/4/34. Has a wife, and is able to earn a little by
picking cotton seed. He stated that he enlisted 5/62 into
Walker Light Artillery, Capt. S.H. Crump commanding,
afterward Infantry. After 6 months the company became
12th GA Battalion Co F. He was wounded at Hatcher's Run,
leg shot all to peaces. Witness W.H. Stone of McDuffie
Co. stated that he had known the applicant for 60 years,
and that he (the witness) was present at the surrender
and that the applicant was in the hospital at Richmond,
wounded. John A. Wilkerson died 5/26/12 in McDuffie Co.
Widow applied McDuffie Co. 10/15/12. She was 71 years
old, a GA resident all her life. J.A. Wilkerson married
Martha F. (Alford?) in Columbia Co. 11/60.
