Spears earned this award by actual combat against the enemy with Lieutenant General Lucian K Turscott, Jr, Fifth Army in Italy. 8-31-1945, page 10A John B Spears Receives Award DAYTONA BEACH, Fla, Aug 30-At a formal parade Saturday at Welch Convalescent hospital, Staff Sergeant John B Spears, 902 Carolina avenue, North Augusta, SC, was a warded the Distinguished Unit Citation Badge by Colonel Harry A Bishop, commanding officer of the installation. Spears, who is a supply sergeant at Welch, has served for nine months overseas in Italy. He entered the Army in August, 1941, at Fort McPherson, GA.
