DEATH OF THOMAS S. METCALF.- Private intelligence received in this city this morning, announces the death, yesterday, of an old resident of Augusta, Thomas S. Metcalf, long identified with transactions in cotton. He was one of the largest operators in cotton in the United States, and handled cotton bales by the thousand with more ease than men of more limited means did with their hundreds. As a banker and mercantile man he was eminently successful. He invested largely in real estate, and added much to the material wealth of Augusta. He bestowed his charity with a lavish hand when occasion called it forth. The cause of his death was not stated. His wife died several days ago. Like the closing lines of "John Anderson," they descended the hill together, hand in hand, "and sleep together at its foot."
