FUNERALS: JOHN WESLEY SMITH: August Chronicle, Nov 16, 1937 John Wesley Smith, 69, for 41 years a fireman on the Southern Railroad, died at 12:15 o'clock yesterday afternoon after an extended illness. Funeral arrangement will be announced later. Mr. Smith was a native of Lexington Co., SC but had spend practically his entire life in Augusta. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elmira Short Smith; four sons; John W. Smith, W. H. Smith, and F. Barney Smith, all of Augusta, and Robert L. Smith of North Augusta; a daughter Mrs. J. C. Schiebe of Jacksonville, Fla. and four grandchildren. Additional Article: August Chronicle, Nov 17, 1937 Funeral will be conducted this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Elliott's Funeral Home, Rev. Edgar C. Lucas will officiate and interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery. Pall Bearers will be Billy Barksdale, J. B. Verdery, H. H. Goodwin, S. O. Houck, F. W. Johnston, and Dr. C. D. Ward. Additional Comments: John W. Smith is buried at Magnolia Cemetery: John W. Smith Sec. #L21-3rd Sec. North of 14th St.@ West Wall Ave. He married Elmira Short and they had 8 children.
