Smith, 203 East Martintown Road, North Augusta, SC, October 10, 1949 at 11:30 am, Mrs. Elmira Short Smith, wife of the late Mr. John Wesley Smith. Funeral services will be conducted at Elliott Sons Chapel this (Tuesday) afternoon at 4:30 o'clock, the Rev. B. Herman Dillard officiating. Interment in Magnolia Cem. Elliott Sons. Her obituary from the Augusta Chronicle Oct 11, 1949 states: MRS. ELMIRA S. SMITH Passes at Residence: Mrs. Elmira Short Smith, 76, wife of the late John Wesley Smith, died yesterday morning at the residence of her son, Robert L. Smith, 203 E. Martintown Rd., North Augusta, SC. Funeral services will be held at Elliott Sons chapel this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. The Rev. B. Herman Dillard will officiate. Interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery. Pallbearers will be James Livingston, F. W. Johnston, Joseph B. Verdery, Charles R. Howard, Parks Hendee, and James Harbin. Survivors are four sons, John W. Smith of Kathwood, SC; W. H. Smith, F. Barney Smith, both of Augusta; Robert L. Smith of North Augusta; daughter Mr. J. C. Schiebe of Jacksonville, Fla.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Additional Comments: She was the wife of John Wesley Smith d. 1937. According to the 1910 census they had 8 children. Altho they never divorced, they did not live together much of the time that the children were growing up. According to my father, her grandson, Elmira was a touch "Little" lady raising a house full of boys on her own. She and her son Barney Short lived together in Augusta near the old Greek Church down on Greene St. for a number of years.
