Seventy-two acres was sold to the Federal government for construction of an arsenal with one-acre to be retained for a family cemetery. This cemetery is still in use today by descendants of the Walker Family and is located on Arsenal Avenue adjacent to the campus of Augusta State University. George Walker, a distinguished state legislator, was the first recorded burial (1804) in the cemetery. Since that time, many descendents of the brothers George, Freeman, and Robert Walker have been buried here. The Walker Cemetery roster includes military leaders, legislators, educators, physicians, as well as Augustans from all walks of life . In 1827, Freeman Walker was interred in the Walker Family Cemetery. Noted poet and personal friend Richard Henry Wilde wrote his epitaph. In tribute to this famous Georgian, Walker County in the northwest part of the state was named for him. For over 200 years, Walker family descendents have undertaken the task of maintaining the graves, monuments and grounds of the cemetery . Thanks to their efforts, this valuable slice of Augusta history will continue to honor and memorialize the Walker Family and their descendents for another 200 years. The cemetery is open by appointment only.
