J. W. Swords, of Conyers, and well known to many of our readers, was murdered near his home in LeCompte, La., on Dec. 24th, by a man by the name of E. W. Wells. It appears that Dr. Swords stood for $25.00 for one of his hands and Wells sold him $34.00 worth of goods, and demanded that the full amount be paid by Swords, who tendered him the $25.00 but declined to pay the other $9.00. Several days after this the two men met and talked and laughed together, and when they parted, Wells walked back into the store office, got a Winchester rifle and taking aim through a small window shot Dr. Swords three times killing him almost instantly. Dr. Swords was only about 25 feet from Wells, leaning upon a counter, when the fatal shots were fired and had no idea that he would be shot. These facts were developed at the inquest. Wells is in jail charged with murder. The family of Dr. Swords will be well cared for by relatives. We sympathize with the dear old father, the wife and children in their time of grief and sorrow over the tragic death of him they loved so well.
