DOWNS, 69, which occurred at his home Tuesday night about 10 o’clock, cast a gloom over the entire town and country- round-about. He was in perfect health, so far as his friends knew, having gone about his daily work in the usual way. He had just retired and was discussing the sad death of Mr. Carter with Mrs. Downs and made this remark, “We never know who will go next, the thing is to be prepared.” These were his last words and he breathed his last in less than two minutes. He was born and raised in Newton County, having moved to Conyers many years ago and was one of Conyers’ most prominent business men for more than 25 years, a partner in the firm of Hewlett & Downs ever ready to greet his friends with a smile and cheery word. He united with the Methodist Church in his young manhood and has ever been a faithful member of that denomination. He was married to Miss Mamie WINBURN 37 years ago. He is survived by his widow and four children, Messrs. Claude Downs of Sarasota, Fla., and Mrs. Walter Fargason of Decatur. Two sisters, Mrs. Ida Sprecher of Hendersonville, N. C. and Mrs. W. J. Kinnett of Atlanta. The funeral will be at the Methodist Church with interment in Rockdale Cemetery.
