Well, if a trip to the facility in Salt Lake is like a visit to Mecca, then a visit to the Allen County Public Library – Fort Wayne, IN is surely like making a trip to Medina. The second largest collection of family history material in the United States is located on the 2nd floor – the Genealogy Center, of the recently remodeled, expanded library. The nearly fifty-year-old genealogy department has over 55,000 volumes of compiled genealogies, as well as some 340,000 plus publications, and over 550,000 items of microfilm or microfiche. In addition, the library houses the largest English-language collection of genealogical and historical periodicals in the world, with more than 6200 current subscriptions. The staff of ACPL created and maintains the Periodical Source Index, or PERSI, which indexes articles (some 2 million items) of genealogical or historical interest, dating back to the late 1700s. It is available online through HeritageQuest here at Nancy Guinn – and at Newton County Library. PERSI has been recently updated to include 132,000 articles from 2006 & 2007. Articles can be obtained by interlibrary loan, or copies made from ACPL (up to six items) for $7.50 plus photo coy costs*. Our archive editor, Marion Farmer, has been sending our newsletters to ACPL for years. And, I was very surprised in 1999 to receive a request from ACPL for a copy of a booklet that I had done on my notorious "Uncle Joe" Noles (1817-1907) from clues in a family diary. I found it listed in their general online catalog. The ACPL is a great genealogy library! Consider adding it to your future travel plans. *Update information, copies & cost, Family Tree Magazine, May 2008 issue Other facts from ACPL homepage & links www.ACPL.Lib.in.us USGENWEB – Use it! Look for the Logo http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm Despite concerns expressed in our cover story, for now, it appears that the USGenWeb sites will stay free for awhile longer. As with most online sites, there is a wide-range of resources available on county-based "Archives Project" locations. The site for Rockdale County, for instance, has very little to offer, while nearby counties Henry and Butts are growing rapidly. If you have ancestors in Rockdale County, I urge you to CONTRIBUTE your local records. Scan your marriage licenses, records, deeds, wills, court documents, tombstones, and family photos (deceased only). If you have a photo-editing program, it is nice to resize images (jpeg & gif only) for online viewing (17-19 inch monitors). A short caption, or anything to make the images better, will also be helpful. All scanned items require a separate file for a description – or transcription. A photo of a tombstone is not electronically searchable, while names and dates in its attached text file are! To follow your family's movements, notations can be inserted within text to make connections to other counties and states. Each site has directions to a standard submission form, which is very easily mastered. Site administrators will place items in proper categories. Some sites have been incorporated into long standing sites, so you may find a few different "looks." The category grid of record types box on some nearby county sites is really easy to navigate.
