In browsing there a couple of weeks ago, I discovered a number of very useful volumes in a really compact area. This section, which I immediately dubbed "Jackie's Corner," is found just to the right of the middle windows – those looking out on "The Blade" sculpture and the satellite dish – on the lower most shelves. The first volume that I noticed was Val D. Greenwood's "Researcher's Guide To American Genealogy," third edition. This book, which has been updated for Internet research, has become a must read for beginning and seasoned genealogists alike, since the first edition in 1973. In the early 1980s, when I first began genealogy, I found it easily the most comprehensive and well organized work of the books then in general circulation at Nancy Guinn. I am going to suggest that at least one of his two 2nd editions, also found here, be moved back into circulation, perhaps with an in- book notation about the updated volume, and possibly some information about our genealogical society! The J-corner also has four large volumes that offer names, addresses, and websites for various sources throughout the country: "The Family Tree Resource Book for Genealogists," edited by Sharon D. Carmack and Erin Nevius, 2004 (Jackie's email address is included here); "The Handybook for Genealogists," 10th edition, Everton Publlishers, 2000; "The Source," 3rd edition by Loretto D. Szucs and Sandra H. Luebking; and "Cindi's List," volumes 1 and 2, 2001, an assortment of 20,000 online resources. You might find "The Genealogist's Address Book," by Elizabeth Petty Bentley, 2005, and her work with Deborah Ann Carl, "Directory of Family Association," 2001, of some value. The same area also has books on ethnic English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, German, Canadian, and Jewish ancestors. There are two wire-bound books by Bob Blankenship on the Cherokee Nation census rolls, those by Senator Henry Dawes (1898) and Guion Miller (1909). The second bank of the lower shelves has a series of books of Georgia records from the Georgia Genealogical Magazine, compiled by Rev. Silas Lucas, Jr. and Edward E. Van Schaick. NOTE: I ran into Jackie Smith at the library and mentioned this story. She said that many of the Special Collections books would soon be stored for library renovation. So, you should hurry to see these very useful books. Sadly, "Jackie's Corner" may be short-lived!
