Campbell Date: 21 Nov 2000 12:00 PM GMT Surnames: Bridges, Brady Classification: Obituary The Macon County Citizen - Oglethorpe, Ga. June 11, 1909 DEATH OF BENJAMIN BRIDGES - The many friends of Benjamin Bridges, who lived near Oglethorpe, were shocked to learn of his death, which occurred at his home Tuesday, very suddenly. The old gentleman had been in very good health for one of his years, and was coming from his garden Tuesday when he was seen to stagger and fall, dying in a few minutes. Only a short time ago his faithful wife preceded him in death, now he goes to join her in the better land. Mr. Bridges was one of the best citizens of the county and his influence for good will be missed. He was deeply pious and a faithful member of the Methodist Church and the Order of Masons. He lived to a ripe old age and established a character that rang true as pure gold and will live after he has gone. He left no children, but his death is mourned by many relatives and friends. [Note: Benjamin Bridges - Born June 20, 1829 - Died June 8, 1909 is buried in Brady Family Cemetery beside his wife, Mary A. [Brady] Bridges [Oct,. 27, 1841 - May 18, 1909]. REV PETER3 BRIDGES (THOMAS2, BENJAMIN1)6,7 was born 1828 in Marion Dist., SC, and died 10 Oct 1864 in Rock Island Prison, Ill (pow-confederate chaplain). He married ELIZA JANE BROWN 14 Sep 1848 in Meriwether Co., GA, daughter of MOSES BROWN and EPSY MIMMS. She was born 25 Dec 1828 in Meriwether Co., GA, and died 27 Jan 1909 in Grapeland, TX. Notes for REV PETER BRIDGES: Peter Bridges was a first cousin to our direct ancestor, John Wesley Bridges, my g.grandfather, and the father of Mildred Caroline Bridges Bryant, my grandmother. mbv Peter Bridges was a Methodist Minister, riding circuit in the Georgia-Alabama border area. When the war between the states began, he joined the 12th Alabama Infantry, Co. G, CSA, as a Chaplain. On February 5, 1863, he wrote a letter home to his wife from Tallahoma, Tennessee. In what may have been his last communication to his wife and children, he refers to a sister Elizabeth and gives instructions to them concerning the cows, and urges them to "live faithful and right in the sight of God." He closes with a prayer that "May the Good Lord bless us all and eventually save us an unbroken family in heaven where there will be no more wars and parting of families." October 1863 found Peter and Bragg's Army of Tennessee engaged in the Battle of Chattanoga. During the Battle of Missionary Ridge in November of 1863, he was taken prisoner by Union Forces and sent to the Union prison at Fort Armstrong, Rock Island, Illinois (located on a rock island in the Mississippi River on the western border of Illinois). During the summer of 1863 Federal authorities had unilaterally ended the exchange of prisoners, so Peter (even though a chaplain) would remain on Rock Island. He died there on October 10, 1864, Grave #1558. The following copy of Peter Bridges' letter was made from the original on October 31, 1952, by Jewel Bridges Guice, a great-granddaughter of Peter. Her words about this man were: "May we all strive to live lives worthy of the wonderful man (our great grandfather) who expressed such faith in our Lord and Savior, and may be indeed be an unbroken family in heaven, as he said." Tullahoma, Tenn. Feb. 5, 1863 Dear wife - After waiting for the mail to come, thinking I would get a letter from you, but have not heard from you yet. I am well today. We have the coldest weather I have ever felt, I think. The ground is covered with snow. I will tell you what we done yesterday. Our regiment worked on a battery and today we are all in our quarters. It is too cold to do anything much. We are fortifying around Tullahoma. There are more soldiers here around Tullahoma than I ever saw at one place. I don't know what number there is here. We get plenty to eat. I will tell you what I had for dinner today. Fresh beef and pork, biscuit and dumplin. We get about two days rations of flour a week and the balance corn meal. I want to write something and I hardly know what to write. We are under Gen. Joseph Johnston instead of Bragg at this time. I got only one letter since I come back to camps. It was from sister Elizabeth. They were all well about two weeks ago. I expect to keep writing to you as long as I can get paper and ink. I think it is the fault of the mail that I have not got a letter from you. I feel confident that you have written to me before now. If the weather is as hard there as it is here I am afraid you will lose some of my cows. If you can buy anything to feed them with, you had better do it if you have to pay a big price for it. We have not drawn any money yet. We get plenty of clothing now. I drawn a pair of pants, a hat and a suit of underclothes since I came back to camps. We can't get our competition money, so I shall draw anything I can get when I need it. I don't know what to write that would interest you as you love to get long letters, but I will try to write something anyway. I want you to write me about how you are getting along with your business. I want you to take your time and not get in too much of a hurry with your work. Just take your time about everything. It has commenced snowing since I have been writing. I hear the cars coming now, but I will not send this off until I see whether I get a letter or not. If I could get a letter from you I think I would have something more to write about. There is not use of me expressing my feelings to you. I reckon you know them, that is my love to you and the children. God knows my feelings and the secrets of my heart. I feel thankful that he does. Jane, I want you to live faithful and try to train up the children right in the sight of God. A few words to the children: Henry, I want you to be a good boy, live faithful and the Lord will help you to be a good boy. Work and make all you can this year. I hope I shall be with you next fall, tho' I know it's uncertain about me ever coming home, but I hope the Lord will spare my life to get home again. A few lines to Mary: I want you to be a good girl, and mind your mother. I want you to get religion and live faithful. I think of you all often, though I am a long way from you. Billy, I want you to be a smart boy, to work and mind your mother, never tell a story if you know it; don't use any bad words; be a good boy and live right; may the Lord bless you and save us in heaven. John, I have not forgotten you and Epsy, how you hugged me when I was home. Be good children and mind your mother. Dear wife, kiss my little babe for me and don't spoil it any worse than it was when I was home. Jane, I know you have many trials and temptations to encounter with; put your trust in God; he is able and willing to bear you up and carry you safely through them all. Remember me in your prayers. My desire is to live right and get to heaven. There are many things in camps to keep men from living as perfectly as they should. I can look around here in camps and think if I was at home there is nothing to keep from living a christian life. I must come to a close by saying once more to you to take up your cross daily. May the good Lord bless us all and eventually save us an unbroken family in heaven where there will be no more wars and parting of families is my prayer. She noted a leaflet blowing around in the cemetery and picked it up. It indicated that some ceremony had taken place honoring a CSA soldier buried at the cemetery and gave note a Son's of Confederate Veterans' camp in SC. Harriette began a little detective work and within a short time had a contact that was a descendant of this soldier. I contacted Bill Greene who told me that his camp had placed a Cross of Honor on the grave of his ancestor Wm. Jasper Bridges. One thing lead to another and Bill agreed to share a photo of Wm. Jasper Bridges and I supplied some missing biographical data based on census, tax digests and an obituary which follows. You will note that the obit gives a slightly different name. I believe the name in the obit to be an error based upon the cemetery survey of Concord cemetery. There is no known Jasper P. Bridges buried at Concord. The Wm. Jasper Bridges buried there, died the same day as the Jasper P. Bridges death from the obit. I suspect there was an error in the obit or Wm. Jasper perhaps went by this name as well? In the photo, Wm. Jasper Bridges wears a very distinctive lapel pin. What little I have been able to learn says that the six-sided star was a well identified symbol of the Mason's in the 1800's. I would love to know more about this if someone knows. We would also like to know more about Wm. Jasper Bridges. If anyone out there has more info on him, please let me know. He died April 25, 1890 and, according to the short obit in The Dawson News, he was about 50 years of age, but he was more like 60 years of age if the census records were correct. His age was given as 39 and his wife's name was Lucinda, age 30 and they had a son, Edgar, 11, in 1870 and a daughter, Florence 5 mos. In 1880, they were listed as John, 47, born in S. Others in the family were Reuben M., 16, James W., 7, Anna J., 12, Sarah C., 10, Mary E., 8' Ann G., 6 and Dorothy C., 2. His record as a Confederate soldier shows that he was medically furloughed from a Lynchburg, Virginia Hospital February 1, 1865, just before the end of the war and we weren't able to learn how or when he got back home. In an attempt to find who his parents were, he was found living with them in Macon County, GA. in 1850 and his age was given as 18. His parents, Jonas and Rachael Berry, were both born in S. C. and so were all the children up to Anna J., 12.; also Jonas' mother Sarah, 70, was born in S. C. In addition to John W. and Anna J., other children were Reuben M., 16; Sarah C., 10; Mary E., 8; James W., 7; Ann G., 6; and Dorothy C., 2. When the census of 1860 was taken of Macon County, John remained there, but his parents, Jonas and Rachael, had moved to Terrell County. Marriage records show that John married Virginia F. McVey in Terrell County March 7, 1883, his second marriage, from which there were no known children. John and his family were in Terrell County in 1870 and were listed as follows: John Berry, 39; Lucinda, 30; son Edgar, 11; and daughter, Florence, 5/12 (5 months). Jonas and Rachael Berry were still living and in Terrell County in 1870. His age was given as 60 and hers was 61. The children at home were Anna, 30; Louani, 25; Dorothea, 21, and Thomas, 18. Jonah Berry,28, lived next door, so he was, no doubt, a son. His wife's name was Martha and she was 23. Their children were Ersula, 4; Zollicoffer, a daughter, 3 and Anna, 6/12. Rachael Berry, Jonas' wife and John's mother, died at age 78 on April 9, 1887. (Dawson News Index, Dawson News, April 14, 1887, page 3.) Homer, son of John, died in June 1890, just two months after his father. The family remained in Terrell County in 1880 and were: John, 47, born in S. C.; Lucinda, 44; daughter Florence, 10 was in school; Sarah, 9; Arra, 3, daughter; and son Homer, 1. Edgar had probably married and left home because at the time of John's death on April 25, 1890 (he died of pneumonia), he was survived by "a" wife, three daughters and two sons. All were the children of his first marriage. After John's death, his brief obituary in the Dawson News (Dawson News Index, Dawson News, April 30, 1890, page 3) stated that he was about 50 years of age, but he was born August 16, 1831. Life was so difficult and there were no antibiotics, so it is a miracle that anyone lived at all and almost all the surviving Confederate veterans were scarred for life in numerous ways not to mention Reconstruction at the end of the War. Psalm 28:1 Memoranda: handwritten: "Buried beside her husband John English Cox - both graves being cement - made alike and adjoining. Two Cape Jasmine bushes at head of her grave, being planted there by herself some years before." "Mary Jane Bridges was known as Mother Cox. My grandmother Lula Mae Cox remembers her as an old woman who always wore dresses that dragged on the ground. She would pull down a sapling for my grandmother to "ride" when she was a little girl. I have several very small pictures of her with many of her grandchildren and a larger 4 generation picture of her with Wm Preston Cox, Lula Mae Cox O'Quinn and Nell O'Quinn Douglas (Aunt Nell would roll over in her grave if I told you that her maiden name was Nellie Mae O'Quinn). John English Cox was a widower with 2 or 3 small children when they married. He was sheriff of Schley Co Ga during the War from 1862-1866. Mother Cox saw Sherman's soldiers come through (I think that must have been a detachment that went to Andersonville nearby)." I remember her as a very old lady, very bent over, wearing tennis shoes(I think - or maybe high lace up ones, but I think tennis shoes because they didn't fit the picture) and about 4'8" tall if that.
