This is a non-copyrighted publication. CULLEN L. BATTLE was born in Taliaferro County, Ga., October 16, 1817. His father John R. Battle was born in the same county, where he was also reared and educated, but afterward removed to Sumter County where he died. He was by occupation a farmer. He wife Jane (Allen) Battle, was born in Taliaferro County and bore him three children, viz.: Henry, Mary and Cullen L. Our subject's mother died when he was an infant, and he was raised by his grandparents in Taliaferro County. In 1834, he moved to what is now Schley County (Ellaville), he has followed farming almost all the time since, and now has a fine plantation in Schley County. He was a justice of the peace for many years, but in 1858 was appointed judge of the inferior court of Schley County, and served until 1866. He was president of the board of county commissioners for a number of years and has filled various county offices since. In 1882 he was elected ordinary court judge of Schley County ordinary court to fill an unexpired term, and served until 1885. He started life a poor boy and by his industry and perserverance has accumulated considerable property. Dec. 31, 1840, he was married to Miss Mary E. Countryman, daughter of John and Mary (Kirk) Countryman, of Schley County, To this union have been born eleven children viz.: Mary J., Martha, Rebecca, George A., Cynthia, Henrietta, Susan, Emma, William, John R., and Thomas J. Mr. Battle has been a deacon in the Baptist Church for more than forty years; he is a member of F.& A.M. fraternity, and is a Democrat.
