(Note: this is a non-copyrighted publication.) Hon. Hines L. Hill was born in Macon County, Ga. His father, Josiah Hill, was born in North Carolina, came to Georgia when a young man and was engaged in the mercantile business all his life. His wife, Sallie Underwood, was a native of North Carolina also. She bore him five children, four sons and one daughter. Our subject was brought up and educated in Macon County. His parents both died when he was young and left him homeless. In early life he clerked in stores up to the time of the civil war, when he joined the Confederate army as a private in company C, of the First Georgia regiment of regulars, and served until he was wounded and lost his right arm in the battle of Second Manassas. He then returned to Oglethorpe, Ga., and was without money or home. He very soon, however, by close application to business, accumulated a little money by clerking, and in 1869 engaged in a small business for himself. But previous to this, in 1869, he was appointed deputy sheriff of the county and served until 1871, when he was elected to the legislature from Macon County. He was the first white representative ever seated in the house from that county. Mr. Hill has been for several years mayor of Montezuma, and is a man for whom all have great respect. He has been engaged largely in the cotton commission business for several years, and is looked upon as a very energetic and prosperous man. In 1872 he was married to Miss Janie Schumate of Fulton County, Ga. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.2 Kb
