I became intrigued with this family and even though I have no known ancestral connections, decided to do a little research on the family. With the help of a good friend who does have a connection, I began to gather bits and pieces about the family as relates to their Schley county involvement. Much of the early family history here is derived from a published volume, "The Hornadys, Root And Branch: The Unfolding of an American Family," by Quinn Hornady, published in 1979. Our involvement with the Hornady family begins with Isaiah Hornaday who is thought to have been born about 1768. In 1788, he married Susannah Carr in Randolph County, NC. Isaiah was a tobacco farmer and was "burned to death one night when he was camping out on the road to Raleigh with a train of wagons filled with tabacco." He left a 17 year old wife, Susannah, and a son named Isaiah. Susannah soon remarried to Rolley Spinks and they moved to Jones County, Georgia with little Isaiah, about 1800. According to family descendants, young Isaiah married Lavina Penelope Robinson and they had six sons and a daughter. The sons were William, Nelson Alexander, Albert, Henry Carr, Troup and John Hornady. The 1850 census finds Nelson Alexander and Albert Crawford along with Nancy (sister?) Hornady living in Monroe county. Both Nelson and Albert list their occupations as dentist. From the Hornady history book: "Nelson Alexander Hornady was considered one of the handsomest men in Georgia in his day. Educated as a dentist, he turned to the ministry in 1863." Both Henry Carr Hornady and Nelson Alexander Hornady were Baptist ministers. Henry Carr Hornady was pastor of the First Baptist Church in Atlanta from 1860 to 1867 and prior to that he pastored a church in Americus. He is found in Sumter county on the 1860 census. He preached the first sermon in Atlanta after Sherman destroyed much of the city. He played a key part in Atlanta during it’s occupation, bringing in provisions from Kentucky and opening a school in the church basement, perhaps the first after Sherman burned the city. Albert Crawford Hornady was also a dentist and he was the link to the Schley county Hornadys. On Sept. 26, 1855, he married Sarah "Sallie" E. Green, the daughter of Frederick J. Green, in Marion Co.. He served in Co. K, 4th Georgia Inf., The Sumter Light Guards. Records indicate that he enlisted as a Sergeant, April 27, 1861. He resigned due to disability on February 9, 1863. His rank at that time was 1st Lieutenant. The 4th Georgia was made up of men from many counties including Sumter (Co. K) and saw action primarily in some of the bloodiest battles in Virginia as well as Gettysburg. Albert Crawford Hornady died 22 Oct. 1867. His obituary can be found at the end of this bio.
