(Note: This is a non-copyrighted publication.) James F. Woods was born in Lancaster District, S.C., Septemver 7, 1840. His father William Woods, was born in the same state and district in 1800. He removed to Georgia in 1841 and settled in what is now Schley County, but soon afterward removed to Marion County, where he lived until 1859, when he moved to Barbour County, Ala., where he has resided since and followed farming. He is a man of good moral charater and has been for many years a member of the Presbyterian Church. His wife Nancy (Huey) Woods was born in South Carolina, and bore him ten children, of whom the subject of this sketch was the eighth. James F. Woods was brought up on the farm and educated in the common schools. In 1859 he removed from Marion County to Schley County, where he remained until the outbreak of the war, when he joined the Confederate army as a private in company G of the Fifth Georgia regiment, and served until the close of the war. He then,in 1865, removed to Alabama, where he lived until 1869, when he returned to Schley County, Ga., where he has resided since. In 1885 he was elected sheriff of his county and is the present incumbent of the office. He is a wellto-do farmer and devotes a great deal of his time to agricultural pursuits. January 6, 1866, he was married to Margaret Herrod of Barbour County, Ala., and to this union have been born four children, viz: Johnnie, Charley, Sarah and Edgar. Mrs. Margaret Woods died in April 1876, and in December of the same year Mr. Woods was married to Julia Wommack, of Schley County, and to this union have been born four children, Viz.: Mary E., Meander(Menanda) J(ackson), Louella and William R(udolph). http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/schley/photos/woods.jpg Photo of James F.
