Many members coming and going. Some asking for letters and not going. There is also an interesting trial of a member, Absalom Carter Cleveland, charged for visiting a Masonic Lodge. It divided the church as you will see. The Masonic Lodge in question, I feel certain was Lodge No.14 of Tazewell. The 1854 roster is in the Marion County Archives and can be viewed at http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/marion/history/14marion.txt Of interesting note are several surnames of families very closely associated with the Primitive Baptist faith. One of immediate notice to me was Abner Woodall. Abner John Woodall was eldest child of Clement Alvis and Sarah Woodall who were very early members of Phillippi and were indeed members in good standing at the time of this incident. Worthy of note is that the congregation based their final considerations of A.C. Cleveland's case upon Mathew, Chapter 18, which tells of Jesus' instructions for treatment of believers who have wandered off.
