The minutes for May 5 & June 2 are identical to the ablove. end # 64 I went back and looked at the previous minutes and could find no reference previously about charges against Brother or Sister Battle so I'm not sure which of the Battles the January and February minutes are referring to. There is a reference to Susan R. Battle on one of the undated membership lists of this era with the notation "Exp." next to her name. Some previous census work on the family of Marcus Battle would seem to indicate Susan might have been his wife. There is a Schley county marriage record for Marcus L. Battle to S.B. Little on 26 Jan 1865. Subsequent 1870 census for Marcus L. Battle in Decateur Co. does not find Susan in his household. Susan R. Little was the daughter of Willis Little, later the postmaster of Poindexter. Susan was 11 years old in the 1860 Schley census taken June 6th of that year. I was unable to locate Susan in the 1870 census. I would like to know what happened to Susan R. Little Battle if anyone knows. Granted letter of dismission to brother Peyton Kendrick & Sister Kendrick Willis Hobbs C. Clk. end # 71 These minutes are the first of several that make reference to taking "Homestead." The Primitive Baptists wrestled mightily with the Georgia Homestead Law of 1868. The following was taken from "Primitive Baptists of the Wiregrass South" by John G. Crowley, p.106. "This uncompromising attitude toward financial responsibility helps explain the church's violent reaction to another piece of Reconstruction legislation: the Georgia Homestead Law of 1868, permitting debtors to withold a certain amount of property from their creditors. This enactment flew directly in the face of Primitive ideas of probity. Elder C.W. Stallings of Cat Creek Church, Lowndes County, Georgia, an invalid, once gave all he possessed to his creditors, depending on providence for support for himself, his wife, and six young children. The faith of some others gave out before that point, and as Primitive Baptists began to "ride the pony," or take advantage of the "bankrupt law," controversy erupted at one Primitive meeting after another."
