Document, Schley County Courthouse Written: September 1888 THE STATE vs. CHARLES BLACKMAN Sentence of Death Sept. Term 1888 Indictment for murder in Schley Superior Court and verdict of "Guilty" at special term, July 1887. The jury trying the above stated case having returned the following verdict, "We the jury, find the defendant, Charles Blackman, guilty, " and the defendant having made a motion for a new trial, which being overruled, defendant excepted the veto and caused the same to be heard in the Supreme Court, when the said Supreme Court affirmed the verdict of the Superior Court, wherefore the judgment of the Supreme Court was made the judgment of this court. It is therefore considered ordered and adjudged that the defendant, Charles Blackman, be removed from the courtroom where he now is, to the common jail of Sumter county, where he shall be safely and securely kept, without bail or ?????????? until the day of execution. That on the (19th) nineteenth day of October, 1888, the said Sheriff shall in said county of Schley as provided by law, publicly hang said Charles Blackman, by the neck until he is dead. The execution shall take place between the hours of ten in the forenoon and three in the afternoon of said 19th day of October 1888. The said Sheriff shall summon and provide a sufficient guard to transport said Charles Blackman from Sumter County jail to the place of execution, and require said guards to be in attendance to assist in said execution. The Ordinary of Schley County will select a suitable place for the aforesaid execution and is ordered to cause a suitable gallows to be erected as provided by law. Dr. J.N. Cheney and Dr. C.H. Smith will attend the said execution and determine when death takes place. Sept. Term 1888 Allen Fort J.S.C.S.C. (Judge Schley County Superior Court) (Notes: Charles Blackman, a negro, was tried 5 times for the murder of Stonewall J. Tondee in 1885. He was found guilty each time and won a new trial 4 times. During this he escaped from the Sumter county jail once and was recaptured. The sentence was eventually carried out after several delays on January 25, 1889. Charles Blackman went to his death that day professing his innocence, despite being found guilty 5 times.
