Respectfully referred to HIS EXCELENCY James Johnson, Governor of the State of Georgia, for investigation and report as to the merits of the within case, and for his recommendation as to final action. Page 2 United States of America State of Georgia County of Schley To His Excellency, Andrew Johnson, President of the United States. The petition of the undersigned, Nathan Respess, a planter aged sixty-five years, a resident of the County of Schley, state aforesaid respectfully represents that under the thirteenth clause of the Amnesty Proclamation of your excellency of the date of the 29th May 1865, he is excepted from the comforts (?) of the Amnesty therein granted to those engulfed(?) in the late rebellion, he having voluntarily participated in said reb ellion & being the owner of taxable property worth over twenty thousand dollars. He admits that in the late unhappy contest his feeling were against the government of the United States, tho he took no active part in the war, his participation having been as a private citizen. He has however taken the oath hereto appended in good faith, with the honest intent to keep ?????? it hereafter to be an obedient & loyal citizen & support the government to the best of his ability. The United States has not siezed any portion of his property nor have any proceedings been instituted against him in any court of the United States for treason or of conspiracy against the United States noris he in possession of any property belonging to the so called Confederate States. He has since the publication of Gen'l ????????? order, in relation to the freedom of the slaves recognized his late slaves as free & soon after the said publication he so ?????????? his slaves & is now employing them at fair & proper wages. Under the circumstances and under suggestions of the proclaimation he makes this application for special amnesty and your petitioner will ever pray. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA STATE OF GEORGIA SUMTER COUNTY I, Nathan Respess, of the county of Schley abd Sate of Georgia, do solemnly swear to affirm in presence of Almighty God, that I will henceforth faithfully defend the Constitution of the United States and the Union of the states thereunder, and that I will in like manner abide by and faithfully support all laws and Proclamations which have been maqde during the existing rebellion with respect to the emancipation of slaves.
