Schley County Georgia Military Civil War 29th Battalion Co. D File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Harris Hill Table of Contents page: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/schley.htm Georgia Table of Contents: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm 29th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry 29th Cavalry Battalion was organized during the winter of 1863-1864 with eight companies and mustered into Confederate service at Lumpkin, Georgia. It was attached to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and for a time served along the Georgia coast in Eastern Florida. The battalion was active in the defense of Savannah and in March, 1865, totaled about 300 officers and men. It continued the fight in Georgia and surrenderd with the department. It's commanders were Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Hood and Major Charles H. Camfield. Company "D" was raised in Schley County and known as Hood's Cavalry of Schley Cavalry and had as it's commander, Captain Jeremiah C. Lasseter. (see below--in 1860 census, he was a teacher.) The 29th Battalion was engaged in battles in McIntosh County, Georgia (2 August 1864 - 4 August 18640 and the Savannah Campaign (Nov.-Dec. 1864).
