Jan. 4, 1934 Hon. A.L. Henson Atlanta, Ga. Dear Sir: Perhaps it is in vain, my writing you, but isn't there something you can do to pay us pensioners more promptly? I myself am a veteran's widow 86 yrs. of age, not able to wait on myself and what with heavy doctor's bills together with other expenses, I am badly in need of full am't the state is due me and can truthfully say from observation I am only "E pluribus Unum" in same condition. I noted in Telegraph(Macon Telegraph newspaper), published in Macon, Georgia, that you promised veterans at reunion last fall you would be able to pay the 1933 pension with exception of 3 months, so they as well as widows were counting on it being paid. Anyhting you can do about this matter to pay us off promptly will be appreciated. Respt. yours, Mrs. A. Allen THE VETERAN'S SERVICE State Capital Atlanta January 15th, 1934 Mrs. A. Allen Ellaville, Georgia Dear Mrs. Allen: I deeply regret that the revenue allocated for Confederate penssioners is not sufficient for us to keep up the payments. The matter is of deep concern to the Governor and he has been trying to find a way to make these payments independent of the cigar and cigarette tax. I am hoping that something can be worked out and you may be assured that we are doing our level best. Very truly yours, Director (unsigned) (This letter is on United Daughters of the Confederacy stationary, scratched out) Ellaville, ga. March 13, '33 Hon. Eugene Talmage Dear Sir: As a veteran's widow of Schley County, Ga., I am writing to you for information as to why we of this psrticulsr county did not receive our January pensions as I note that other counties rec'd theirs. I appealed to the ordinsry of this county, even before the Bank Holiday but he seemed not to know why our pensions were delayed thus, more than other counties. Hoping to receive at an early date, not only the Jan. pension but the full amt that is due of all unpaid pensions, I am Very truly yours, Mrs. A. Allen STATE OF GEORGIA Executive Department Atlanta March 16, 1933 Mrs. A. Allen, Ellaville, Georgia My Dear Mrs. Allen: Your letter has been received, and I am referring it to the Pension Commissioner. I feel surethat the checks were issued to all counties at the same time, as usual, and that there must be some mistake about this. You will hear from Mr. Ayers promptly about the matter. Cordially, Eugene Talmadge (signed) Governor March 17th 1933 Mrs. A. Allen Ellaville, Georgia Dear Mrs. Allen: Our mutual good friend, Governor Eugene Talmadge, has referred to me for attention and reply your inquiry of the 13th instant, as to why the pensioners of Schley county have not yet been paid for the month of January. This Department cannot make requisition to the Governor for pension payments until certified Pay rolls are on file from the Ordinaries. Through some over- sight the Ordinary of Schley County failed to file his pay rols on file and the pensioners could not be included in the January requisition. I have, however, been furnished with the pay rolls, and have made requisition to the Governor for the funds with which to pay the pensioners of Schley County for january, and these funds will be sent just as soon as the Treasury can get its bank clearings straightened out. With kindest regards, Yours very truly, Commissioner of Pensions (unsigned) Copies to: Governor Eugene Talmadge, State Capital Judge W.C. Stewart Ellaville, Georgia.
