State of Georgia Schley County Personally appears Ben Kilcrease of Worth county, State of Georgia, who, being duly sworn, says on oath that he is a bona foide citizen and resident of said state, and has been continuously since the 3rd day of August 1832; that he enlisted in the military service of the Confederate States during the war between the states and served as a private in Company G, of the 5th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers, Jackson's Brigade; that whilst engaged in such military service, at the battle of Missionary Ridge in the state of Tennessee, on the 25th day of November 1863, he was wounded as follows: inside of the right knee joint, ball japiny the ???? side of the bones & rendering said ???? substantially & essentially useless and further while cutting wood at Bethel Springs, Tenn. (on duty) cut index & middle fingers so that they both had to be amputated by the surgeon of the regiment. Deponent desires to aprticipate in the benefits of the Act, approved October 24, 1887, and the acts amendatory thereof, and makes application for the allowance to which he is entitled for the year thereunder ending October 26, 1890. STATE OF GEORGIA SCHLEY COUNTY Personally came before me William Allen & C.L. Peacock & A. Allen, citizens of Schley County, in said state, who being duly sworn, say that they are well acquainted with Benjamin F. Kilcrease and know, from having been with him in the army, that he received the wounds in the military service, as stated, by him in the foregoing affidavit; that said wounds permanently disable applicant, as stated by him; the said applicant is a bona fide citizen of this state, and resides in Worth county, and we are well satisfied that all the statements in his affidavit are true. Crockett, both known as reputable physicians of said county, who, being severally sworn, say on oath that they have carefully examined B.F. Kilcrease and after such examination say that the applicant has been injured as follows: Received a gun shot wound, the ball entering the inside of the right thigh just above the head of the humerous passing downwards & fracturing one of condials(?) of humerous passing out through ??? ???? tendons thereby producing considerable disability. Also at Bethel Springs, Tenn. while cutting wood on duty cut the index & middle so they both were amputated at the second joint by the surgeon. W.J. Hall, M.D. (signed) M.J. Previous to this time his pension was $10 as an invalid soldier.) QUESTIONS FOR APPLICANT STATE OF GEORGIA WORTH COUNTY B.F. Kilcrease of said state and county, desiring to avail himself of the Pension Act hereby submits his proofs, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, disposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? B.F. Kilcrease live Worth Co., Ga. Parkerville(?) P.O. 2. How long and since when have you been a resident of this state? all my life. 3. When and where were you born? 3rd day of Aug 1832 in Butts Co., Ga. 4. When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? May 11th 1861 at Macon, Ga. Co. G, 5th Ga. Regt. 5. How long did you remain in such company and regiment? up to 27th May 1864. I was captured 17 miles above Marietta, Ga at Dallis & was held a prisoner ??? of the war at Rock Island, Ill. 6. For how long a period did you discharge regular military duty? about 3 years 7. When, where and under what circumstances were you discharged from service? I was paroled at Rock Island, Ill in Oct. 1865. 8. What is your present occupation? have no occupation 9. How much do you earn per annum by your own exertions or labor? very little 10. What has been your occupation since 1865? Farming when able 11. Upon which of the following grounds do you base your application for pension, viz: first, "age and poverty," second, "infirmity and poverty," or third, "blindness and poverty"? 1st & 2 12. If upon the first ground, state how long you have been in such condition that you could not earn your support? If upon the second, give full and complete history of the infirmity and its extent? If upon the third, state whether you are totally blind and when you lost your sight? I have not been able to earn a support in 8 years on account of heart trouble & was shot through right knee at Missionary Ridge 25th Nov 1863. It swells up and causes me much pain & most of the time unable to labor any at all. 13. What property, effects or income do you possess, and its gross value? none at all 14. What property, effects or income did you possess in 1894, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898 and 1899 and what disposition, if any, did you make of same? had no property in any of those years. 15. In what county did you reside during those years, and what property did you then return for taxation? Worth Co. returned no property. 16. How were you supported during the years 1898 and 1899? supported by my son-in-law. 17. How much did your support cost for each of those years, and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own labor or income? I do not know what it cost. I contributed scarcely nothing. 18. What was your employment during 1898 and 1899? What pay did you receive in each year? had no employment & got(?) no pay. 19. Have a family? If so, who composes such family? Give their means of support? Have they a homestead? none except the children who have married off and have to labor hard for their support. I live with my son-in-law in Worth Co. none of them has any homestead. 20. Are you receiving any pension? If so, what amount, and for what disability? Kilcrease for pension under section 1254, Code, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? William Allen, Schley Co., Georgia 2. Are you acquainted with Ben F. Kilcrease, the applicant; if so how long have you known him? known him for past thirty years. 3. Where does he reside and how long and since when has he been a resident of this state? resides in state of Ga. lives since I have known him. 4. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? Enlisted May 1861 at Macon, Ga. Co. G, 5th Ga Regt. know this because I was in same Co. & regt. 5. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? I was 6. How long did he perform regular military duty, and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier, and the time and circumstances of his discharge from the service? All during the war, and made a good soldier, served until the close of the war. 7. What property, effects or income has the applicant? (give your means of knowledge.) no property. I live in the same county. 8. What property, effects or income did the applicant possess in 1896, 1897, 1898 and 1899, and what disposition, if any did he make of same? he had no property to dispose of 9. Has he conveyed away any of his property in the last four years, if so, what was it, and to whom? he had none to convey 10. What is applicant's occupation and physical condition? farmer. his physical condition is very bad 11. Is the applicant unable to support by labor of any sort, if so, why? he is not. he is crippled in such a way that he is not able ? ????? to ????. 12. How was he supported during the years 1898 and 1899? by help of children and neighbors. 13. What portion of his support for these two years was derived from his own labor or income? scarcely none at all 14. Give a full and complete statement of the applicant's physical condition that entitles him to a pension under section 1254, code? he is crippled in his knee when was shot during the war and he has heart trouble so that he can not labor but very little. 15. AFFIDAVIT OF PHYSICIANS STATE OF GEORGIA WORTH COUNTY Personally came before me W. L. Sikes and M.J. Crockett, both known to me as reputable physicians of said county, who being severally sworn, say on oath that they have examined carefully B.F. Kilcrease, applicant for pension under Section 1254 Code, and after such personal examination say that his precise physical condition is as follows: Gun shot wound in right knee, also in left arm, also has enlargement of heart, also eyesight is failing him and is suffering with asthma, also has lost the index and middle fingers of the left hand all together renders him unable to earn a living They further say on oath that the physical condition of applicant renders him unable to labor at any work or calling sufficient to earn a support for himself, and that we have no interest in said pension being allowed. Kilcrease for pension under section 1254 Code and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: How long did he perform regular military duty and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier and the time and circumstances of his discharge? He served in the army for three years and twenty days. He was a good soldier always at his post. He was captured in May 1864 and I know nothing of the circumstances of his discharge. H.W. Lindsay, Comm. of Pensions Dear Sir: I enclose Mr. B.F. Kilcrease application for pension. He has had his witness in Irwin Co. to make further affidavit as to his having been captured & which I presume will be satisfactory. Mr. Kilcrease is getting very feeble & is old & he has no property. He has been drawing a pension heretofore under the Invalid Act & in my opinion the application is made in good faith. Yours Very Truly, J.W. Price. (Transcriber's note: B.F. Kilcrease's pension was approved although there was no amount noted on these documents. He continued to re-apply thru 1907. He file ends there. I believe he died after May 20, 1910 as he is found on a list of Confederate soldiers entertained at a reunion at Doles, Worth Co. on that date.
