Richard Johnson Atlanta, Ga. Dear Sir: I send you pension application of John Morrison, an indigent Confederate Soldier. He enlisted in the late war while on a visit to Arkansas and served through the war in the same company. He was in the same army as the witness T.J. Hixson. There are quite a number of old soldiers in this county that will testify as to his military service, if necessary. Please pass on the application before the legislature convenes so that he will be able to get in the next distribution to that class of pensioners. The little money from the state will be a great help to him as he is old, feeble and very weak in eyesight and poor. Respty, A.J. Walters Atty at Law. Lumpkin & Taylor Attorneys Ellaville, Ga. Feby., ? 1898. Hon. Richard Johnson Atlanta Dears Sir: This old man deserves a pension. He is now 72 years old and no property, served through the army and was a splendid soldier. Yours truly, P.E. Taylor Ordy., S.C. Putnam, Ga. Jan. 7, 1898 Mr. Johnson: During the last session of the legislature, I called upon you and made inquiries about appliaction of John Morrison from this Schley County for indigent pension. I found that in this application it was shown that he has been returning for taxation some land and that this was the main bar to him getting a pension. I have not examined the records myself, but am reliably informed that he does not now nor has he ever owned the land but that the records will show that his wife owned some land in Pulaski County, which she sold and bought the land in Schley, and that the deed is in her name, and though John Morrison has has been returning the land, he has never held a deed to it. Morrison is wholly unable to work and dependant and apparently it is possible for him to live only a few years. I shal consider it as a personal favor (for as a public man, it will help me) if you would instruct me what is necessary to be done to establish a claim that will authorize you to place him upon the pension rolls. Thanking you in advance for the favor, and hoping at some time to be able to reciprocate. I am, Very resp. J.M. Collum Rept. Schley Co. APPLICATION FOR PENSION BY A WIDOW UNDER ACT OF 1910. See newspapers on-line for Schley County Marion County Georgia Marriage Book A 1844-1866 MORRISON, Hugh to Ellen Sophronia Hickson on Jan 27, 1857 Recorded in Schley Marriages Morison, John to Morison, Saphronia 15 Dec 1869. The 1850 Marion Co. census finds an Ellenda Hickson (12 yr old female) and Thomas Hickson (12 yr old male) living in the household of Seaborn Hickson in the 57th Division. Hugh Morrison is also found in 57th Division. He is 18 yr old son of Hugh and Catherine Morrison. He has a 24 year old brother (I presume) in the same household named John. Age variance, for John, is significant in later censuses but would seem to agree with his birthdate as given in his application for pension. I conclude John H. and Hugh were probably brothers and Ellen Saffronia Hickson married them both. Also, evidence is strong that witness T.J. Hixon and Ellen Safronia Morrison were probably brother and sister. I don't know what happened to Hugh Morrison, but I suspect he was a casualty of war. There was a Hugh Morrison who enlisted in the 2nd Arkansas Infantry and is listed as a deserter prior to 1863. I can't find any evidence that he was the same man. 1860 Schley Census 231 MORRISON, Hugh 28 M farming Suffronia E. 24 F Mary L.E. 2 F 1870 Schley Census page 47, taken 15 July 1870 278 278 MORRISON, Catherine 70 f w keeping house 1400 200 SC John 38 m w farmer 700 900 GA Ellen Sophronia 33 f w no occupation GA Vadolla 5 f w GA Margarett 40 f w no occupation GA Sallie 33 f w no occupation GA DARDEN, Warren 6 m m GA
