The following letter is found in the file as support for an increase in the pension. A.J. Walters LAWYER Ellaville Ga. Feb. 18th, 1898 Hon. Richard Johnson Atlanta, Ga. Dear Sir: I enclose you pension application of T.P. Barnes of this county, who after drawing a pension of $5.00 for the loss of a toe for several years, finds that ?? to his financial condition and the condition of his foot from the old wound, he needs the larger pension that he so richly deserves. Never was a braver man entrusted with the trying position of “color bearer.” He who stands up well in front to be shot at, and shoots not in return; bullets passing from front and rear, trying the nerves as nothing else can and ever holding aloft the flag that lead his men to victory. Do what you can for him. He is brave, honest, needful. Respty, A.J. Walters Additional Comments: There is a great deal more information on Tip Barnes on the Schley Co. page including his obit and a heart wrenching letter to the editor of the Ellaville paper after his death.
