William Allen S.I. Pless E.S. Baldwin T.J. Hixson Sworn to and subscribed before me, this 3rd day of Dec. 1888 T.J. Dozier, Ordy. Affidavit of E.S. Baldwin & T.J. Hixon attested by C.R. McCrory, Clerk Court of Ordinary & J.N. Cheney, Clerk Superior Court, S.C. Dec 7/88 State of Georgia Schley County Personally comes before me, T.J. Dozier, Ordinary of said county, J.N. Cheney and C.H. Smith, both known to me as reputable physicians of said county, who, being severally sworn, say on oath that they have carefully examined R.C. Haralson and after such examination say that the applicant has been injured as follows: Minnie ball entered on the left side of nose & passed through just at base destroying the vomar (?) and passed out at center of right cheek carrying away a portion of the cheek bone and leaving an unsightly opening between the nose & where said ball passes out about the size of a silver half dollar, closing rhe nostrils & said applicant breathes through said hole, said opening exposed the mucus membranes of the nostrils & through from which applicant contracted a severe cough which disables applicant from the performance of ordinary manual labor & in our opinion applicant is entitled to a pension under the act. Said wound directly injuring the health of applicant so he is unable to perform manual labor as aforesaid & said applicant is badly ruptured on the right side which necessitates the wearing of a truss & which also renders applicant unable to perform normal manual labor. J.N. Cheney, MD C.H. Smith, MD Sworn to and subscribed before me this Dec. 3rd 1888 T.J. Dozier, Ordy. We certify that the wound in applicants face permanently disables him without regard to his being ruptured. Dec. 3rd 1888. J.N. Cheney, MD C.H. Smith, MD Attest. C.R. McCrory, Clerk Court of Ordy. REPLY FROM THE PENSION OFFICE Ex. Dept. Atlanta Dec. 12, 1888 The within proofs are not full & applicant cannot be paid therein. The law requires three witnesses to prove his service, only two made the oath. Do the witnesses know absolutely of the service by applicant and his injury while in the army or do they speak from here say or ??iformation? The proof must be by witnesses who know of the facts. The law makes no allowance for rupture. Can the physicians say that his wound in face permanently disables applicant without regard to the cause? W.H. Harrison, Clk. R.C. Haralson re-applied in Feb. 1889 with essentially the same facts much better stated and a more definitive statement by the same physicians and was granted a pension of $50.
