Flurry of Schley county, State of Georgia, who, being duly sworn, say on oath that he is a bona fide citizen and resident of said state, and has been such since the 25th day of December 1836; that he enlisted in the military service of the Confederate States during the war between the states, and served as a Private in Company A, of 27th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers, Colquitt's Brigade; that whilst engaged in such military service, at the battle of Seven Pines in the State of Virginia, on the 31st day of May 1862, he was wounded as follows: Ball entered the right hip bone and passed ?? through the liver and out at the center of the sternum or breast-bone which wound has partially paralized the right leg & right arm & produced a ????? cough from which wound applicant has been rendered practiacally incompetent to perform the ordinary manual avocations of life. Deponent desires to participate in the benefits of the Act, approved October 24, 1887, and the Act amendatory thereof, approved December 24, 1888, and makes application for the allowance to which he is entitled thereunder for the year ending October 26, 1889. COMMISSIONED OFFICER'S AFFIDAVIT State of Georgia Schley County Personally came before me Robert Patton of the county of Schley, State of Georgia, who, being duly sworn, says that he was a commissioned officer in Campany A, of 27th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers, and that deponent knows R.D. Flurry, and that he received the wounds in the military service as stated in his foregoing affidavit, and that wounds permanently disables the said R.D. Flurry sa stated by him in said affidavit. Deponent further states that said R.D. Flurry is a bona fide citizen of this State and resides in Schley county. Pobt. Patton Capt. Co. A, 27th Ga. A. Allen, Dept. Clerk, S.C. Cheney, both known to me as reputable physicians of said county, who, being severally sworn, say on oath that they have carefully examined R.D. Flurry and after such examination say that the applicant has been injured as follows: Ball entered the right hip bone & japed up through the liver & out at the center of the sternum or breast bone which wound has partially paralyzed the right leg & right arm & produced a chronic cough from which wound applicant has been rendered practically incompetent to perform the ordinary manual avocations of life. Returned for a full and precise description of injury. 2. What business does applicant follow? 3. What is his weight and height? (notes besides this say weight 165, height 6 feet, 60 years old) 4. Was he discharged from the army on account of the wound? If not, why not? 5. Can he not labor at light work with his hands? 6. Why did he not apply last year? (notes beside this say, did not know of the law) 7. Does he have to use crutch on account of paralysis of leg? To what extent is leg & arm paralized. Answer fully and under oath. W.H. Harrison, Clk. There is also a note which can only partially be read which would seem to indicate some displeasure with the oath on the above documents having been administered by the Deputy Clerk as not a properly authorized officer for this purpose. RESPONSE Georgia Schley County Personally comes before me R.D. Flurry, the applicant in the within petition, who being duly sworn deposeth and answers as follows: shot with a ball from a loaded shell after the bursting of the shell, said ball entering just at the right hip bone striking said hip bone and ranging upward passed through deponent's liver and was cut out by the army surgeon in Richmond, Va. on the night of the 31st of May 1862 at he center of the breast bone (said ball having lodged just under the breast bone) said wound producing paralysis of the right side & leg & arm also a cough which is chronic, peonent having had said cough ever since wound was received. Deponent is a farmer by occupation. Deponent is 60 years old & weighs 165 lbs. and is 6 feet high. Deponent was not discharged from the army on account of said wound but got a 90 day furlough and went back to the same command but was not put on active duty until about twelve months thereafter. Deponent can perform light work with the hands such as shelling ground peas & c. Deponent never applied last year because he was uninformed that no one was entitled to a pension except those who had lost a leg or arm in the service. Deponent does not use cruthches on account of paralysis but deponent can not walk much without the leaders drawing so as to keep deponent from walking at all. Deponent can not use said leg three hours continuously at any time and never without some pain & the more it is used the more painful it is. And deponent swears that said leg & arm is rendered substantially and essentially useless and said cough has impaird deponent's health caused by said wound through the lungs as aforesaid permanently so as to render him practically incompentent to perform the ordinary manual avocations of life. Meadows is a Notary Public & Ex off J.P in & for said county. T.B. Myers, Ordinary March 12th 1889. Add'l Info: Robert D. Flurry received a yearly pension of $50. He was b. August 13, 1831 d. May 28, 1904. He is buried at Concord cemetery. His obit can be found in the Schley Newspaper Archives issue dated June 2, 1904. He married Francis E. Allen in Schley Co. on 15 Dec 1858.
