Dyess of Schley County, state of Georgia, who being duly sworn, says on oath that he is a bona fide citizen and resident of said state, and has been such since the 6th day of August 1843; that he enlisted in the military service of the Confederate States during the war between the states and served as a private in Company "B," of 17th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers, Benning's Brigade; that whilst engaged in such military service, at the battle of Marvin Hill in the state of Virginia, on the 1st day of July, 1862, he ws wounded as follows: Struck with a "Minnie" ball just above the knee on the inside of the left leg and said ball shattered the thigh bone where it connects with the bones below the knee or which it rests in its socket at the knee & the ball lodged under the knee & bursted the knee pan where it now rendering the left leg partially stiff and some times deponent has to walk with a stick & crutch and all the time most with a stick, which wound causes deponent to limp all the time & prohibits deponent from taking much exercise by walking which wound permanently disables deponent & renders him practically incompetent to perform manual labor & deponent is a farmer by occupation and renders his left leg substantially useless. Deponent desires to participate in the benefits of the Act, approved October 24, 1887, and makes application for the allowance to which he is entitled thereunder. G.C. Strange, citizens of Schley county, in said state, who being duly sworn, say that they are acquainted with G.C. Dyess and know that he received the wounds in the military service, as stated by him in the foregoing affidavit; that said wounds permanently disables the applicant, as stated by him; that said applicant is a bona fide citizen of this state, and resides in Schley county, and we are will satisfied that all the statements in his affidavit are true. Dozier, Ordinary of said county, J.N. Cheney and J.A. Parks, both known to me as reputable physicians of said county, who, being severally sworn, say on oath that they have carefully examined G.C. Dyess and after such examination say that the applicant has been injured as follows: The ball entered just above the knee on inside of left leg and ranged downward bursting the head of the femur and also fractured the patella. The ball is encysted under the patella. We are fully satisfied that the applicant J.(G?) C. Dyess has been injured to the extent claimed by him & that he has been rendered permanently & practically incompetant from the performance of ordinary manual labor by reason of said wound & in our opinion applicant is entitled to the benefits allowed under the act approved Oct 24, 1887 for the relief of the disabled, said applicant being forced to carry a stick to walk with most of the time. The injury must be fully & destinctly stated. How is the leg rendered substantially useless? Does it inflame and run now? Is it enlarged? Is bone diseased? Does he not actually use his leg daily? Please answer fully. M.H. Harrison, Clerk Georgia Schley County Personally appears before the undersigned officer, G.C. Dyess, the applicant on the attached application for a pension who on oath says that deponent was shot by a minnie ball, said ball entering just above the knee joint on the inside of the left leg and ranged diagonally downward and bursted the knee cap & loged just under the knee cap which wound has healed up but it is sore all the time so that deponent cn not use the leg any time scarely without the same becomes so sore as to cause peonent to lay up in bed. Said wound necessitates the carrying of a stick all the time by applicnt. Deponent has never had said ball cout out because he was advised by a board of physicians that if he should do so that it would undoubtedly cause such reformation (?) as to necessiatate the amputation of said leg. Deponent swears that said leg is rendered substantially & essentially useless by said wound causing the bones & leaders in said knee to become sore & the knee cap busted so as to cause deponet to walk with a stick all the time. G.C. Dyess Sworn to and subscribed before me this April 8th 1889 Lawrence Hill, J.P. Georgia Schley County We, J.N. Cheny & C.H. Smith, practicing physicians in said county certify that we have carefully examined the applicant G.C. Dyess & after such examination say that the ball entered from the inside of the leg just above the knee joint and ranged downward and fractured the femur & patella & said ball is now lodged under the patella so as to be felt by moving the patella which can easily be done as the said patella is bursted is several pieces which wound has rendered said applicants leg substantially & essentially useless as the ball grating upon the bones of the knee if much exercise is taken causes pain & said wound causes the applicant to carry a stick all the time to walk with. Myers, Ordinary of said county, certify that Lawrence Hill is a Justice of the Peace in & for said county & that J.N. Cheney & C.H. Smith, the attesting physicians are practicing physicians in & for said county & am satisfied that the statements made by G.C. Dyess, the applicant as to his disability is true. (Note: Subsequent yearly re-filings of the pension application indicate a different date of residency in the sate of Georgia, which would most probably be his birthdate.
