Mathis of said state and county, desiring to avail herself of the Pension allowed to Indigent Widows of Confederate Soldiers, under Act of General Assembly, passed __________ 1900, hereby submits her proofs, and after being duly sworntrue answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? Mrs. E.A. Mathis Schley Co., Ga. Ellaville, Ga. 2. How long and since when have you been a esident of this state? Resident this state since 1837. 3. When and where were you born? Born Macon Co., Ga. 1837. 4. When and where was your husband born--state his full name and when were you and he married? Born Macon Co., 1833 William E. Mathis, married 1852. 5. When and where, and in whatcompany and regiment did your husband enlist or serve during the war between the states? Married 1852, Macon Co., Ga., Enlisted 12th Ga. Reg. Company K. 6. How long did your husband serve in said company and regiment? Served for (2) two years. 7. When and where did your husband's company and regiment surrender and was discharged? At close of war. 8. Was your husband present at the time and place when his company and regiment surrendered? He was not. 9. If not whith his command at surrender, state clearly and specifically where he was, when he left command, for what cause and by what authority? He was at home (smudged--could be Macon or Marion) County, Ga. on furlough. 10. When and where did your husband die? Schley County, Ga. 1867. 11. Which of the following grounds do you base your application for pension, viz: First--Age and poverty; Second--Infirmity and poverty, or Third-- Blindness and poverty? On first, age and poverty. 12. If upon the first ground, stste how long you have been in such a condition that you cannot earn your support. If upon the second, give a full and complete history of the infirmity and its extent. If upon the third, state whether you are totally blind, and when and where you lost your sight? Past (2) two years. 13. What has been your occupation since your husband's death? Have no occupation since my husband's death. 14. How much can you earn gross, by your own exertion or labor? Very little if any. 15. What property, real or personal, or income do you have or possess, and it's gross value? Have no property, no income. 16. What property, real or personal, did you possess at death of husband or he left you and of the year 1899-1900, and what disposition, if any, by sale or gift have you made of same? Had no property at his death. Had no property 1899-1900. 17. In what counties did you reside in 1899 and 1900, and what property did you return for taxation? Schley County, Ga. Return no property. 18. How have you been supported since death of husband and especially in 1899 and 1900? Help from daughter. 19. How much did your support cost for both of those years and how much did you contribute by your own labor or income? Cost about $100.00, very little for two years. 20. What was your employment durinh 1899 and 1900--how much did you receive for each year? Had no employment 1899 & 1900. 21. Have you a family? If so, who composes such family? Give their means of support. Have they any lands or other property? Yes, one daughter, farming-- no land & no property. 22. Have you ever made an application for pension before? Never made application before. 23. How many applications have you made for a pension and under what class? This is the first application. Mrs. E.A. Attaway & C. pearson of said state and county havibg been presented as a witness in support of the application of Mrs. E.A. Mathis for a pension under the Act of _____ 1900, and after having been duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? W.R. Attaway & C. pearson. 2. Are you acquainted with the applicant, Mrs. E.A. Mathis? If so, how long have you known her? I am. Known her for 30 years. 3. Where does she reside, and how long and since when has she been a resident of this state? Resides Schley Co., Ga. ever since I knew her. 4. When and where was she born? Macon, Co., Ga. 5. Were you ever acquainted with her husband? We were. 6. Where did he reside in 1861? In Marion County. 7. When and to whom was he married? to Mrs. E.A. Mathis. 8. When and where was he born? Macon Co., Ga. 9. How long have you known him? Since 1860. 10. When and where did William Mathis enlist in the war between the states, and in what company and regiment did he enlist and how do you know this? In 1861 (June) in Marion County. 11. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? (poor handwritting, looks like) in war (could be I was.). 12. How long did he perform regular military duty? About four years. 13. When and where was his company and regiment surrendered and discharged from service? At Appomattox C.H. in 1865. 14. Were you with the command when it surrendered? No. 15. Was William Mathis, the husband of applicant present? No. 16. If not present, where was he? He came home on sick furlough. Was never able to return to the ????? & died 2 years later from some sickness. 17. When and where did he leave his command? In Mount ?????, Va. For what cause? On acct. of sickness. By whose authority? Officer in command. How do you know all this? ?? ever? thin? & know it personally. 18. When and where did William Mathis die? Schley Co., Ga 1866. 19. Where did he reside at his death and how long had he been a resident of Georgia at his death? In Marion Co. All his life. 20. Do you of your own knowledge know tht applicant is the lawful widow of William Mathis? Only because they live together as man and wife. 21. Has she remained unmarried since her soldier husband's death, and is she his widow? She has ???? ???? a widow. 22. What property, effects or income has the applicant, if any, and how do you knowthis of your own knowledge? Has no property, because she is my near neighbor. 23. What property, effects or income did applicant possess in 1899 and 1900 and what disposition did she make of it? No Property. 24. Has applicant conveyed any property in last two years or given any away, if so what was it and to whom? Had no Property. 25. What is applicant's physical condition and her chances and ability to earn a support? old and very feeble, not able to do any kind of labor. 26. Is applicant able to earn a support at labor of any sort, if not why? Not able because she is old and feeble. 27. How was she supported for 1899 and 1900? By her daughter. 28. How much did applicant contribute to her support for last two years? Very little. 29. Give full and complete statement of applicant's physical condition? Old and infirm. 30. AFFIDAVITS OF PHYSICIANS State of Georgia Schley County Personally before me comes Dr. C.G. Jones and Dr. J.N. Cheney both known to me to be reputable physicians of said county, who, being severally sworn, say on oath that thy have examined carefully Mrs. E.A. Mathis, applicant for a pension under Act of 1900, and after such personal examination say that her physical condition is that: She is old and infirm, suffering from lung trouble and severe cough and rendering her unable to labor or earn a living at anything. and we have no interest in said pension if allowed.
