All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Harris Hill http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00011.html#0002514 March 2, 2004, 8:35 am AFFIDAVIT TO BE MADE BY THE WIDOW State of Gerogia County of Schley In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary in and for the County of Schley, Mrs. Sophia Stewart, who being sworn according to law, says under oath that she is the widow of Henry Stewart, who was a soldier in the service of the Confederate States, and served as a member of Company A, of the 27th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers; that he enlisted in said service on or about the 1st day of Sept. 1861, and was in the Virginia army up to April 4th 1862. That while in the army, he was on the 15th day of February 1862, That as follows. That at Manassas, Virginia, was taken sick with jaunduces & mumps & while the Virginia army was moving, being unable to walk of said diseases, was placed upon a wagon. The wagon turned over and injured him internally, from which he was taken to hospital at Richmond, Virginia & from said diseases & injury received, died at said hospital on the 4th of April 1862 in said state of Virginia. Deponent further swears that she was the wife of said deceased soldier during his term of service in the army, and that she has never married since his death; that she became his wife on the 10th day of November 1831, and that she has resided in Georgia continuously since the 20th day of December 1816 (or 1806); that Georgia is her home, and was such on the 23d day of December 1890, and since said date she has not lived in any other sate or locality. Deponent, as the widow of said deceased soldier husband, applies for the pension provided by Act of the General Assembly of Georgia, approved December 23d, 1890, for the pension year ending February 15th, 1892, and herewith tenders the proof of her right to receive the allowance granted by said Act. Myers, Ordinary AFFIDAVIT FOR THREE WITNESSES State of Georgia County of Schley In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary, in and for said county, witnesses Robt. Patton, A.L. Jordan and Peter Stewart (each known to said Attesting Officer as truthful, reliable and reputable citizens), who severaly say under oath, that, from their own personal knowledge, Mrs. Sophia Stewart, of the county of Schley, state of Georgia, is the widow of Henry Stewart, who was a soldier in Company A of the 27th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers. That said soldier enlisted in the service of the Confederate States on or about the 1st day of Sept. 1861. That while in said service, or by reason of said service in the Army, he lost his life as follows: That at Manassas, Virginia was taken sick with jaundices & mumps & while the army of Virginia was marching, being unable to walk, from said diseases, was placed on a wagon & while on said wagon, the same turned over & injured him internally, from which place he was sent to Richmond, Virginia hospital & from said diseases & injury died at said hospital in said state on the 4th of April 1862. We further swear that Mrs. Sophia Stewart was the wife of said soldier during the service, and that she has not intermarried since his death, and that she resides in Schley County of the State of Georgia. Myers, Ordinary (Note: In subsequent refillings of this application Sophia Stewart claims her residency in Georgia from her birth and gives that year as 1808. She also states year of marriage as 1833 on one occasion. Schley Cemetery archives indicate she is buried at Phillippi the dates from her stone are b. 8-16- 1809,d. 2-06-1895.
