Bridges Nearest Relative: Mary Alorya(?) Barnes Ellaville, Schley, Ga Medium height, medium build, blue eyes, light hair Registered by J.F. Stewart Sept. 12, 1918 Additional Comments: Is this a relative of Thomas Pryor Barnes, whose daughter was named Tommie Curtis Barnes after his commanding officer in the Civil War? Col. Wm. T. Black was commander of the 5th Ga Inf. His wife, as family lore indicates, had a maiden name of Curtis. Supposedly Mrs. Black, nee Curtis, sewed the first 5th GA battle flag from the silk of her own wedding dress. When color bearer "Tip" Barnes found out he was to be a father (during the war), he was sure it would be a son and asked that he be named Tommy Curtis Barnes, in honor of his commander and his wife. But, to him was born a daughter, and she was named Tommie Curtis Barnes. This must be a relative. Does anyone know Wm. Curtis Barnes?
