The work is being done by Mr. J.O. Smith, an experienced contractor of Buena Vista. The first services will be held in the new church on the third Sunday in January, as it is thought that it will be finished by that time. SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL EDITION (Transcriber's Note: This appears to be an insert in the Dec. 15th, 1911 edition. It also would appear to be a fairly complete listing of most of the Ellaville businesses of this era. For those few of you like Ernie Jones and myself who are endlessly trying to envision what business was where and when, this will be of some use.) WILL BUILD STABLES Mr. I.M. Livingston, who recently moved with his family to Ellaville, has purchased the corner lot at the rear of the Murray, Stevens and Williams Warehouse and adjoining McNeil's Blacksmith shop and will erect a sales stables and a store building. The store will probably be two stories in height. Mr. Livingston is an energetic and progressive business man and we are glad to have him as a citizen of our city. BANK OF ELLAVILLE The Bank of Ellaville began business in this city September 16th 1910, and ever since it was opened up here has grown in popularity, and is today one of the most popular banks in Ellaville. The bank carries a depositors guarantee fund with which to protect its depositors. The popular members of this bank are: J.H. Stevens, President; A.C. Murray, Vice-President; S.Z. Williams, Cashier; and E.S. Collins, Assistant Cashier. A.C. MURRAY & SONS One of the most popular and well known dry goods stores in the city is that of A.C. Murray & Sons. The present firm has been doing business since 1906, but Mr. A.C. Murray has been in business in Ellaville for many different enterprises. Only an up-to-date line of goods is sold by this successful firm. His two sons, Messrs. Arthur and Grady have the management of the store. ELLAVILLE REALTY CO. Messrs. E.L. Bridges and J.B. Smith as the Ellaville Realty Co., have been the means of many big real estate deals being out through in Schley county since the organization the first part of the year. They have sold land, rented houses, farms and put through many deals of a like nature. They now have many farms and homes listed with them for sale and rent. BANK OF SOUTHWESTERN GA. The Bank of South-western Georgia, while not an a home institution, has been a popular bank ever since its establishment in August 1889. When it first began business here in 1889, John W. Wheatley was president. Mr. A.W. Smith of Americus, is president now, and Mr. J.C. Rainey, manager. Both are excellent gentlemen and quite popular here. J.D. WILLIAMSON At this place can be found one of the largest assortments of art squares, rugs, curtains, shades and furniture in town. Mr. Williamson also carries a big line of dry goods and groceries. Mr. Williamson is also interested in many enterprises in Ellaville and very optimistic regarding the future of his town. A.C. ROYAL At this well known place can be always be found quality goods. This firm, formerly called Royal Bros., was composed of Messrs. A.C. and J.T. Royal, the latter retiring and now serving Schley in the legislature. Mr. A.C. Royal has since conducted the business in a most profitable manner. DYESS & LIVINGSTON These two prominent young men have been successful since the establishment of this store in December, 1910. Mr. Dyess purchased an interest in the business in March. Their business has increased to such an extent that they will have a new and larger building put up. When they move into the new building in January they will add a new line of dry goods to their present line of groceries and feed stuffs. We are glad to say that they are firm believers in the value of advertising and we predict for them great success. BRIDGES & DIXON Nowhere in Georgia will be found a more popular drug store than that conducted by Dr. B.L. Bridges and Mr. H.F. Dixon. A first-class drug store in every sense of the word, it has met with growing success every year. With pretty show case fixtures, a marble floor and cool electric fans to sit under, it affords a delightful retreat for every body. J.H. SELLARS & SONS Since September 1st, this well known firm has conducted one of the biggest closing out sales ever put on in Ellaville, and people have shown their faith in the goods by flocking there in great numbers. Although it is their intention of going out of business this year they have conducted a most successful dry goods and grocery store here for the past four years. DR. N.(W.) D. SEARS For many years past Dr. N. (W.) D. Sears has conducted a drug store in Ellaville. A few years ago his store with others was reduced to ashes, but nothing daunted, he soon built back and purchased a new stock of drugs and other goods and continues to serve his many customers. His son, Mr. J(odie) C. Sears, recently put in a line of first-class groceries in the rear of the store. WILLIAMS & COLLINS "The Old Reliable" is an appropriate name for the firm of Williams & Collins. For many years Mr. H.J. Williams has been in business in this city and is one of the most popular merchants in town. Mr. E.E. Collins, the other member of the firm, is well known in Schley county. They make a specialty of furniture, but carry an excellent line of dry goods and groceries. ALLEN GROCERY STORE Perhaps one of the oldest and best known business men ever in Ellaville is Mr. A (urellius) Allen. For many years he was in business with Dr. Cheney at the corner of Oglethorpe and Broad streets. At the death of Dr. Cheney he moved to his present location. A few years later Mr. Will Tondee bought an interest in the store, since these two business men have won a reputation in this county with their fine line of fresh fancy groceries. STRANGE & ARRINGTON It is a well known fact that this firm carries one of the largest and most complete lines of dry goods and groceries in South-west Georgia. Both gentlemen have been in business here for many years. They recently established a branch store at Ideal with Messrs. A.M. Park and H.A. Peacock, former Ellavillians, in charge. You can always find anything you may want in the dry goods line at their store. CITY DRUG STORE There is hardly a more popular place in Ellaville than the City Drug Store, where many people are found drinking the popular drinks which they serve. One of the largest fountains in Georgia can be found at their store. They also carry a fresh line of groceries, toilet articles, etc. BLACKSMITH SHOPS Ellaville can rightfully boast of two of the best blacksmith shops in this section of the state. Mr. A.S. Baugh has done repair work in Ellaville for many years and everybody is familiar with the grade of work he turns out. He has many satisfied customers all over Schley county. J.D. McNeil & Son always turn out only satisfactory work and plenty of it. In connection with the repair shop is a garage where the junior member of the firm, Mr. Charlie McNeil, doctors sick automobiles and bilious bicycles. It can be truthfully said that he is one of the best mechanics in Georgia, and he is frequently called upon to repair automobiles from adjoining towns. NEW GROCERY STORE The beginning of 1912 will find Ellaville with a new fancy grocery store. Messrs. H.D. Burt and Will Tondee will open a new first-class grocery store in the place now occupied by J. H. Sellars & Son (Transcriber note: there have been ads for several weeks announcing J.H. Sellars going out of business). Both of these young men are well known in Schley county and Ellaville, and we predict for them a brilliant success in their new undertaking. ELLAVILLE GUANO COMPANY The Ellaville Guano Co., which is owned exclusively by Schley county people, supplies the farmers of many counties with high grade fertilizers each year. Very few people now order their guano from other concerns, as the factory here supplies them with fertilizers just as good and, besides they had rather patronize home industries. DUNCAN BROTHERS The firm of Duncan Bros. began business in Ellaville in the year 1910, and their store is today one of the leading dry goods establishments. After the death of Mr. Gordon Duncan some years ago, Mr. E (mmett) M. Duncan became a member of the firm and he, with his brother, Mr. J(oseph) L(ee) Duncan have made a success of the business. (Transcriber's note: This is interesting as an ad in this same issue of the paper boasts the month of Sept. as celebrating the 11th anniversary of Duncan Bros. at the "same old stand." It also notes that Duncan Bros. is located "next door to the Hotel.") E.H. MORRISON While we are mentioning the prominent business houses of the city, we do not desire to forget our good friend E.H. Morrison, who runs an ice cream and cold drink stand in a tent on the lot adjoining McNeil's blacksmith shop. He has been quite successful since he established it sometime ago. E.R. JORDAN Mr. Jordan makes a specialty of selling the best buggies in this section of Georgia, and he has had a successful business since he came here in 1906. He was, for sometime, proprietor of the livery stables here, his excellent service was always appreciated by his many customers. (Transcriber's note: Roney Jordan purchased the livery business from Anthony J. and Robert Elbert Hill in the very early 1900's). TWO WAREHOUSES Any better warehouse facilities are found nowhere than in Ellaville. The Murray, Stevens & Williams, and the The Schley County Warehouse and Supply Co., can not be excelled for quick service and courteous treatment which they give to their customers. Bring your cotton to Ellaville and give them a trial. HISTORICAL Twenty-six years ago this week, was published in the little town of Ellaville, the first issue of the Schley County News, then called the Schley County Enterprise, and was received by the few people living in this town and Schley county. In 1885, A.J. Harp, an experienced newspaper man and able writter, established the Schley County Enterprise and for some time edited the paper, later selling to Mr. Don McLeod, an experienced editor. Mr. McLeod sold to Mr. Trice who afterwards sold the paper to Mr. R.J. Elliot. From Mr. Elliot's hands it passed into those of Miss Mary Hanaly (Hornady), who ably edited the paper for some time. Miss Mary Hanaly (Hornady) then sold to Col. J.H. Cheney, our present city court solicitor. In January the present editor (Will V. Jones) assumed charge. As can be seen the News has passed through many hands, and as the saying goes, has "passed through fire and storm." Fire completely destroyed the plant when the two-story building belonging to Mr. T.A. Collins, burned some years ago. A new outfit was bought and the News continued to visit the homes of its subscribers. For twenty-six years the News has been published, striving all the time to promote that which was good; desiring all the time to be a welcome guest in every home. We only hope that it will meet with the same reception in the future that it has in the past, and that it will ever be regarded as a friend to every one and to every public cause. In the words of the first editor, "Remember, dear friends, ever to have a kind word for your paper. It is pleasant always not to be forgotten, your town will be judged afar off by the character of the paper it sends out to the world, and the deep and abiding solicitude we feel for the success of the paper at home and abroad, is beyond description." CLIPPINGS FROM THE NEWS Clipped From the Enterprise Below we publish a few items clipped from the issue of September 26, 1885: The 30th September 1884, the first train made its appearance in Ellaville. It taps the South-western Railroad at Anderson, the terminus is Buena Vista, the county site of Marion county. The road reached Buena Vista in February following, and is 27 miles long. The road, we are reliably informed, is exceeding the expectation of the most sanguine. There are 11 stores, 1 cotton warehouse, two white and two colored churches in Ellaville and not a vacant residence in the place. Mr. B.A. Strange has nearly completed the new addition to his store. Rev. C.E. Boland was the first subscriber to call and pay his subscription. Accept our thanks and good wishes. We are informed that Conductor Singleton has a new conductor at his house. We refer to him for particulars. Cotton has been selling here all the week for 8, 8 1/4 and 8 3/8. We learn from reliable parties that Americus and Oglethorpe are not paying any more. Everything else being equal, patronize home institutions. Eva Cheney, Julia Peacock and Hattie Stewart, three charming little Misses, visited our office Thursday. Call again. The boarding house of Mr. Geo. P. Suber is the place to get something for the inner man. Mr. and Mrs. Suber are clever, nice people and will treat you right; we know whereof we speak. The first session of the inferior court held in this county was in 1858 near of just where Mr. B.A. Strange's house now stands on some pine logs. The first session of the superior court was held the same year in the Baptist church. The following were the county officers: Sheriff--J(ames) F(ranklin) Woods Clerk Superior Court--J(ohn) N(ewton) Cheney Ordinary--T(homas) J. Dozier Tax Receiver--J.M. Thornton Tax Collector--W.C. Kelley Coroner--L.A. Giles County Commissioners--Robt. Patton, C(aleb) L(afayette) Peacock, P(leasant) F (reeman) Dixon, A(ndrew) M. Caskey, R.H. Slappey. W(illiam) C. P. Cleghorn, Clerk of the Board. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/schley/newspapers/ellavill2682nw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 14.6 Kb
