In the following article she sets forth some of her most interesting newspaper experiences. You have asked me to give my most interesting and satisfactory experiences when connected with the Schley County News, and without hesitation, I recall the day the man who had agreed to buy the paper came to the office for the final settlement. When the deal was closed and I had expressed good wishes to my successor, I walked down from the second story of the T.A. Collins brick store with the joyous feeling of "a bird out of a cage," as the young people express it, "On top of the world." For some reason, Mr. Trice was called to his home in Florida (Tallahassee) and friends prevailed on my brother to buy the paper so that it might be kept in the county. His business occupied his full time so I was finally persuaded to undertake the task of manager. I was a good deal younger then and more susceptible to flattery, but very soon realized that writing and turning in copy (were) a very small part of the work of a newspaper. My most tragic experience was the day when the printer in lifting the forms to go to press let all the type fall in a heap on the floor. "Thoughts were too deep for words," as i gazed helplessly at the wreckage. Repairs took not only considerable time but money. I have never felt capable of giving advise but I would suggest to the boy or girl inclined to enter the field of journalism to first get practical experience in some well regulated newspaper office. Apologising for this "tale of woe," I must add that the most satisfactory experience of my very happy life in Dawson was my connection with the News. The editor, E.L. Rainey, the business manager and several men in the press room stood between me and the disagreable things that come to all newspaper folks. My task of reporting gave me comparative leisure, and contact with many delightful people. I think it is always an inspiration in writing to feel that you can even in a small way, "help the groeth of a thought that struggles toward the light." My experience has fully convinced me that managing a newspaper is a "man's job." Additional Comments: Again, I regret the exact date of this paper is unknown, but it is thought to be in the 1937/38 range and was a part of an issue reflecting on the earlier years of Schley County. It is known that the paper was The Ellaville Sun. Miss Mary Hornady, former editor of The Schley County News for many years died in Schley Co. on 26 Mar 1943 at the age of 82.
