But a mile from Ellaville, Mr. Wm. Allen has a model farm. This gentleman has an acre and quarter in vine cultivation and makes at least 500 gallons of wine per year from the scuppernong grape. Besides this he has an orchard of mulberry trees, which bear from May to August of each year, and upon the fruit he fattens and raises his hogs. A few miles from him lives a freedman, Henry Spivey, who has built for himself one of the coziest homes to be found anywhere, cultivating around him two hundred acres of land, raising every self supporting article of food upon his farm, and better than all this, he don't owe a dollar. We are ever glad to notice this thrift and enterprise on the part of our freedmen. But as we have said before, Schley county is the home of as good people as the sun ever shown upon, and they are at all times full of thrift and enterprise.
