Mr. McCarthy was born in Ireland more than seventy years ago, near the lakes of Killarney, and came to America when he was twenty-eight years of age. Mr. McCarthy is in good health, yet quite rugged, and while his wife, Mrs. Charity McCarthy is eighty-eight years of age, has held the plow handles, Uncle Johnnie has hitched himself up and pulled the plow all this season, and tells us that he has raised a good crop. Johnnie and Charity enjoy life, don’t shirk work and live comfortable with prospects of many years yet ahead. The rich Irish blood that courses through Uncle Johnnie’s veins is true to the mother country and he delights to talk of the Emerald Isle, and longs for the independence of its citizens. Uncle Johnnie is full of native wit – he loves a good story and has promised us a good snake story ere long.
