The Atlanta Constitution April 9, 1911 3 BLACKS DIE AT MOB'S HANDS Masked Men Overpower Schley County Jailer Victims Of Mob Were Charged With Murder Of S.C. Eason Which Ocurred In Ellaville January 2--Trial Set For Next Week. Ellaville, Ga., April 8.--(Special.)--Three negroes, charged with the murder of S.C. Eason in a negro store in Ellaville, January 2, were last midnight removed from the Schley County jail by 200 masked men and lynched in a pine thicket a quarter of a mile from town. About 12 o'clock the mob came to the jail and awoke the jailer, A.C. Baugh, telling him they had a prisoner. When he opened the door half a dozen guns were thrown in his face with the request to unlock the cells in which the three negroes were confined. Blacks Rushed to Thicket. With guns held on him, the jailer unlocked the cells and the mob tied the prisoners with ropes around their necks and led them to a pine orchard about a quarter of a mile from the jail, where they were hung to a tree and their bodies were riddled with bullets. At the inquest over Eason, the evidence placed the murder of Eason on three negroes, Murray Burton, Charlie Pickett and Dawson Jordan. All were placed in jail, the former two in Ellaville. Dawson Jordan was sent to Columbus for fear of violence. Last Sunday night Jordan's attorney had him brought back for the purpose of working up the evidence in the trial, which was to come up next week at the April term of the superior court. Schley Deplores Lynching. Citizens of the town were aroused from sleep by the firing of about a hundred shots from pistols and shooting in separate volleys. Judging from the tracks the mob consisted of 200 men. The people of Ellaville and Schley county generally greatly deplore the lynching. Everything is quiet today. An inquest was held this morning by the coroner, and the bodies were turned over to their relatives. Additional Comments: Notes: Cemetery records would indicate that S.C. Eason was probably Spencer Eason who is buried in Ellaville City Cemetery. Eason, Spencer 1880 1911. Dawson Jordan is buried at UNION HILL A.M.E. CHURCH. I was unable to locate the burial for the other two black men or Homer Frazier. The other "killing" mentioned in the Jan. 5, 1911 article is detailed in a December 1910 article.
