Americus, Ga., May 30.--(Special)--A convict about whom almost as much interest centers as was manifested in the cases of "Lord" Beresford and Harry Hill, is young Ed Clarke, formerly of Americus, and who is now doing time at the Gress camp, near Kramer. Clarke was cashier of the Planters' bank of Ellaville, in Schley county, and appropriated the funds of that institution to his own purposes. He was convisted and sentenced to a term of four years in the penitentiary and did time with Beresford at the Gress camps. His term has about expired and in a few days he will again breathe the air of freedom. A strong effort was made several months since to have Governor Atkinson pardon young Clarke, many people in this city and Ellaville signing the petition for executive clemency, but to no purpose. The young ex-cashier is prominently connected and his fall created great surpeise throughout this section of the state. The term of imprisonment expires this week.
