Murray has the finest melons we have seen. He says he counted on 1-18 of an acre 65 melons which will average twenty pounds. An acre at this rate would produce 1165 melons and at seven cents apiece which is a low price would bring $87.55. He also has a couple of alliance pigs (Jackson and Turner) the finest we have seen and as Concord Alliance has offered a premium for the finest pigs to their age, Mr. Murray will exhibit Jackson and Turner. Look out gentlemen we believe they will take the ribbon. The people picnicked extensively last Saturday up and down the creek. There was four picnics within ten miles of this place. The Putnam boys played Americus two innings of ball which resulted 9 to 4 in favor of Americus. Mrs. Betsy Hickey, who is fifty-seven years old, says she never had two days sickness in all her life. Says she can walk farther and do more work than most of the sixteen year old girls and doesn’t mind it half so bad. Mr. E.T. Lightner came very near having a serious accident several days ago. While driving down a hill some part of his harness broke which caused his mule to kick and fall breaking his buggy shafts. His wife, who was in the buggy with him at the time with her little babe, jumped out. Nobody was hurt. Wednesday, July 4th, a mass meeting was held in Ellaville which resulted as follows: C.A. Hudson and S.A. Sellars delegates to the gubernatorial convention which will be held in Atlanta on the 9th of August. J.N. Cheney and L.W. Dixon delegates to the congressional convention which will be held at Abbeville in August. After an illness of a few days the little daughter of Mr. Erastus Payne died on Saturday night, July 7th.
