The congregation was large, especially on Sunday, there not being room enough in the church for all the people to get seats. Rev. Mr. Phillips preached on Sunday from the text, “The Lord is good.” He did justice to his subject and no doubt ‘twill be like bread cast on the water, to be gathered many days hence. Already there has been some work done on the Buck creek camp grounds and the people appointed last Wednesday as the day to meet there and have a general cleaning up. I notice also that several of the roads leading to the above place have been worked. The annual barbecue took place at Pine Grove last Friday. A large crowd was on hand plenty of dinner and to spare. No doubt it was a delightful occasion. Mr. B.A. Strange, who has been merchandising in Ellaville for many years, has sold his store house and goods to Mr. Tom Collins, of Murray’s X Roads, and will soon leave for the land of flowers. Mr. Ed Strange, who has been doing business for his brother, B.A. Strange, will continue at the same old stand for Mr. Collins. Mr. J.L. Murray took the premium offered by Concord alliance for the largest melon. It weighed 54 pounds. The residence of Dr. Cheney was struck by lightning last Friday, but not seriously damaged. Our people will have a splendid chance to get good if meetings will make them so. Camp meeting commences next Saturday night and holds ‘till Thursday following. A protracted meeting will commence at Concord on Saturday before the fourth Sunday and continue for several days. The Primitive Baptist association will take place at Phillippi embracing the first Sunday in September. It was reported some time ago that Mr. Stephen Murray was a candidate for the office of tax receiver which was a mistake and it is now reported that he is a candidate for tax collector which is incorrect. I think I know Mr. Murray well enough to say for him when he does decide to run for office he will let it be known through the columns of his county paper. I can’t tell what Mr. Murray intends to do in the future but at present he is no candidate. “AJAX” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/schley/newspapers/nw1692schleyco.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.9 Kb
