E.S. BALDWIN DEAD On last Saturday morning citizens of our town received the sad intelligence that Mrs. E.S. Baldwin was dead. In the passing away of this good woman we can truthfully say her loved ones have sustained an irreparable loss. Born June 12, 1834, she lacked only a few days at the time of her death of being seventy-three years of age, and these years were filled with goodness of heart, greatness of purpose, and a desire to do right. She sought only the highest and noblest things of life. To her, littleness was loathsome. She abhorred unrighteousness and lived above the paltry sordid affairs of this world. Perhaps the predominating trait in her character was truthfulness. As a pearl of great price she guarded this jewel and whether she made friend or foe, truth was paramount with her at all times. She was heard to remark one day that she wanted nothing told her that was known to be an untruth. As a helpmate to her husband, no one could excel her. She possessed an illimitable supply of sound, practical judgment, as Solomon so wisely says, "she did him good and not evil all the days of her life." Another charming attribute that the good woman possessed was her love for home. That is where the effulgence of her ideals shone forth brightest, for that is where her life practically spent. Never will we pass the Baldwin homestead without thinking of the hours she spent there, working with her flowers, looking after her domestic affairs or reading her bible. To her, religion was a living reality. For years she kept the family altar and daily she studied to know God's will, and she lived so beautifully, the Christian life, not very demonstrative, but oh so true to the highest principals of Christianity. To the modest violet she should be compared, for while she made no outward show, the perfume of a refined nature emanated from her sweet Christian spirit, and shed its hallowed influence on all about her. The charm of her life was her consecrated love for her church and children. By church, we mean all the word implies. As a member of the mission society here, she was ever punctual to pay her dues and to uphold all that was undertaken. Her wise counsel guided many a barque over tempestuous seas, and assisted many a weak struggling soul to "higher ground." Her strength was in the Lord, and in Him did she put her trust. He was her daily comfort, and to Him she went in time of trouble. The precious influence of her words and her life, but deeds and her prayers will abide forever. Her children can surely rise up and call her blessed. Gladly will she welcome them to that home beyond the skies where pain nor sorrow ever comes and where all is love and peace.
