BURTON Was Visiting His Daughters in Americus When The Summons Came. He Was One of the Oldest and Most Highly Esteemed Citizens of Schely County. Large Crowd Attended Funeral. Our people were greatly shocked and grieved Tuesday when message came announcing the sudden death of Capt. Robt. Burton, which occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. j.N. Scarborough at one o'clock. He left home on last Thursday in his usual health, though he had been quite feeble for several monthsand had made every preparation for death. He often talked with his intimate friends in regard to the matter saying that he was living in readiness, only waiting for the summons from his Master. The body was brought to Ellaville on the 3 o'clock train Wednesday afternoon accompanied by sorrowing family and several friends. The pall bearers were Messrs. R.M. Murphy, C.R. McCrory, T.V. Bridges, A.C. Murray, H.J. Williams and Claud Dixon. The flower laden casket was tenderly borne to the Methodist church, where the deceased for sixty years had worshipped, and the large assembly was given the opportunity to look for the last time upon the face of their dead friend, whose long residence here had so endeared him to the people of the whole county. At four o'clock the solemn and impressive funeral service was conducted by Rev. R.F. Williamson. The minister in touching remarks testified to the high christian character of the deceased and felt that the bereaved could have the comforting assurance that death found his gentle nature as he had lived in the odor of faith, quiet and peaceful. After a short service at the grave the remains were laid to rest in the family lot. To the devoted daughters and grand children who feel so keenly this bereavement the sincere sympathy of many friends is extended. The Americus Times-Recorder has the following notice of his death. The end came without pain or the slightest struggle, the result of some acute heart affliction. Though advanced in years Capt. burton possessed considerable vigor, and only the day previous stated that he felt better and stronger than in several years. Yesterday morning, however, he remained in his room, being slightly indisposed. Mrs. Scarborough and other members of the family sitting by the bedside and conversing pleasantly with him. Suddenly Capt. Burton gasped, and in a moment was beyond the pale of human suffering. Death came as easily as sleep to a tired child. The deceased was 77 years of age, and was numbered among the most prominent and esteemed citizens of Schley Co. where he had resided nearly a half century. He was born in Effingham county, June 4th, 1820, removing thence to Ellaville where the best and happiest years of his life were passed. His grand old homestead there is one of the landmarks of Southwestern georgia. His daughters, Mrs. Crisp and Mrs. Scarborough, alone survive him, the cherished helpmate having been called to her reward on high more than three years ago--May 15th 1894.
