J.M. CHAPMAN DIES SUNDAY AT 87 Mr. J.M. Chapman, 87, well known retired Schley county farmer, died at his home near here Sunday night at 11 o’clock after a long illness. The son of Sara Winfred Carter Chapman and William Chapman, he was born in Schley county and had spent his entire life in the county. He was the last survivor of seven children. On December 16, 1875, he married Miss Alice Chesterfield DeVane, who died in the spring of 1940, in their 65th year of marriage. Upon celebrating their 62ND anniversary, Mrs. Chapman told a Sun staff writer, “We’re not tired of each other yet.” The story of their happy life together attracted wide attention. Funeral services were conducted at Hopewell Methodist church Monday afternoon with the Rev. Roy J. Bond officiating. He was assisted by by the Rev. C.D. Carter. Burial was in the cemetery with Masonic rites. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Lily DeVane, of Albany; four sons, Henry, Compton and Chesterfield, all of Schley county, and J. Martin, of LeGrand, Cal. Grandsons were pallbearers. They were: Frank DeVane, James and Edwin Chapman, Linton Tondee, Harry Malone and Joe Morrow.
