FOSTER CHENEY, 51, DIES EARLY SUNDAY
John Foster Cheney, 51, of Palm Beach, Fla., and Ellaville, died suddenly of a 
heart attack at his summer home out from Columbus, early Sunday morning.  Mr. 
Cheney was the oldest son of the late Dr. John Newton Cheney and Fanny Foster 
Cheney of Ellaville.  He was graduated from the Ellaville high school and from 
the agricultural school at Dahlonega.  He served in the First World War, as a 
second lieutenant in the Quartermaster's corps and was a member of the 
American Legion.  After several years in the oil business in Columbus, Mr. 
Cheney with his wife, the former Miss Lucy Sheridan, of Columbus, moved to 
Palm Beach, Fla., where he founded the Palmetto Petroleum Oil Company.  He was 
connected with the company until several years ago when he retired because of 
ill health.  Among the survivors are his widow; two sons, John Foster Cheney, 
Jr., and William Henry Cheney, of Palm Beach, Fla., his mother, Mrs. Fanny 
Cheney, of Ellaville; one sister, Mrs. O.C. Hill, of Ellaville, and one 
brother, J.N. Cheney, of West Palm Beach, Fla.  Funeral services were held 
Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock from Striffler's Funeral Home in Columbus, with 
Mr. Walker, pastor of the Columbus Episcopal church officiating.  Pallbearers 
were Herbert Banner, Guy Blackmon, Sidney Simons, T.G. Reeves, Frank David; of 
Columbus, and Floyd Wideman of Palm Beach, Palmer Mullins.  Interment was in 
the Legion Cemetery in Columbus.
