HALSTEAD PASSES AT 84 Mr. S.B. Halstead, 84, Schley county surveyor for 34 years and well known as a school teacher and student of local history, died Tuesday morning at 2 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.A. Myrick, at Rupert, after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted at Fellowship church in Schley county with the Rev. J.L. Whitley, of Mauk, officiating. Born near Dothan, Ala., November 3, 1858, Mr. Halstead, familiarly known as Bentley, moved to Schley county at the age of two and with the exception of a few years in south Georgia when a young man, spent his entire life in the county. Mr. Halstead held wide attention for years as one of the most through schoolmasters of his time, the era when one teacher instructed sixty or more pupils crowded in one-room rural school-houses. Mathematics was the subject foremost in his mind and throughout his life he found great interest in solving tough problems. Absorbed in the history and legend of his county, Mrs. Halstead furnished Mrs. H.J. Williams much valuable information when she wrote the History of Schley County more than a decade ago. One of his chief delights was discussing the development of this section. He served as surveyor until advanced aged forced his retirement several years ago. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. C.H. Myrick, Phoenix City, Ala.; Mrs. Lewis Henry, Albany; Mrs. W.A. Myrick; eight sons, J.G. and M. C. Halstead, Cairo; W.B. Halstead. West Palm Beach, Fla.; and S.B. Halstead, Albany; G.D. and Carl Halstead, Ellaville; three sisters, Mrs. J.D. Hammack, Wallis, Texas; Mrs. Mattie Gaulding, Port St. Jo (Joe), Fla., and Mrs. Eliza Eason, Florida. Pallbearers were Herbert Phillips, W.E. Wallis, Joel Myrick, J.T. Oliver, John Willis and Wallace Bell.
