Halstead, age 74, of Rt. 2, Ellaville, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997 at home. Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, January 1, 1998 in Giddens Funeral Chapel in Ellaville with burial in County Line Baptist Church Cemetery in Macon County, Rev. Larry DeLoach officiated. Serving as casket bearers were Wilbur Justice, John Belcher, Eddie Belcher, Marvin Smith, Jr., W.A. Stembridge and Bill Welch. Honorary pallbearers were Rodney Halstead, Tony Halstead, Christopher Halstead, Thomas Stewart and Tom Batchelor. Mr. Halstead, an Albany native was born December 25, 1923 to Henry Grady Halstead and Ethel Draffin Halstead. He had lived in Schley County most of his life and was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, and was in the logging business for many years. He was a former employee of Redman Home Builders and was engaged in farming and was owner and operator of Town and Country Produce near Oglethorpe until his death. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Survivors include his wife, Fannie L. Halstead of Ellaville; two daughters; Rachael H. Ruland of Americus and Rosemary Greene of Ellaville; four sons, Charles R. Halstead of Americus, Richard G. Halstead of Ellaville, George R. Halstead of Oglethorpe and Raymond E. Halstead of Plains; three sisters, Mrs. Maybelle Womble of Cairo, Mrs. Agnes Willis of Florida City, FL, and Mrs. Shelby Jean Merritt of Atlanta; also seventeen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. The family received friends Wednesday, December 31 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Giddens Funeral Home of Ellaville was in charge of arrangements.
