HARPER, SCHLEY NATIVE IS DEAD AT 78 Marion S. Harper, 78, a native Schley Countian who achieved outstanding success in the cotton oil industry, died last Friday at Daytona Beach, Fla., where he had lived for the past three years. Born in Ebenezer community, he spent his boyhood in Schley county before moving to Americus. He attended a business college in New York, returned to Americus and became a book-keeper for the Sheffield Hardware Company. Later he joined the Kentucky Refining Company, becoming general manager. With R.L. McMath he organized the Americus Oil Company, then his own oil organization, of which he was president for more than a quarter of a century. He sold out his interest in the Marion Harper Oil Company in 1936 because of ill health. He was then a veteran of more years' experience in the cotton oil business than any other man in America. During his career he was president of the Cotton Seed Crushers' Association of Georgia. He was a member of the Piedmont Driving Club and the Capital City Club. Funeral services were held at Spring Hill chapel in Atlanta Monday afternoon, with the Rev Dr. Lester Rumble officiating. Burial was in West View cemetery. Prominent Georgians from all walks of life formed a large honorary escort. Active pallbearers were Hollis Lanier, Albany; Charles Lanier and Charles Crisp, Americus; Edwin Peeples, James Dunlap, Edgar Dunlap and Frank Harrold, Jr., all of Americus. Survivors include his widow, the former Miss Anne Lyle, of Americus; a nephew, Ross Harper of Philadelphia, and several nieces.
